The exercise isn't done as a power shrug.  The shrug just becomes part of it and natural for lifters who clean often.

    Also,

Nobody cares dude, if you had great natural talent for Olympic lifting would you really miss out on not having to work, getting paid to turn yourself into the Incredible Hulk and represent your country against the Communists, bang sluts, be on TV and travel across the world? Just because it'll give you joint issues that you'll probably get anyway as you get older? Other people join the Army for those reasons and don't even live to see their 40's and 50's. If I was any good at Olympic lifting I'd be all over it.

lol.  Best way to advertise being a pro athlete.

Valid point on the joints, my grandad has various things just from life, broken arms/legs. Hands/knuckles, nose, arthritic knees, survived cancer, the list goes on.
Life in general is dangerous, honestly if you EXCELL at something, and will enjoy doing it, but are afraid of all that crap at the end of the road, then.. well.

I like to think he means life in general, not just natural "gifted" ability. Push it to the limit, and play it smart, your not an idiot, you've got a brain, use it at the same time as kicking ass. Wink

Yeah I think its kinda fucked up when society forces you to sacrifice your body so you can achieve some petty records. I love watching people living heavy weights,  but that doesn't mean I would never recommend someone chop of 20 years of their lives (like American footballers do) for the sake of the sport. Life is much too precious for that. If you want to put your life on the line that is fine, but don't make it sound like you're doing something noble or that other people are pussies if they don't destroy themselves in a similar fashion.

In case you mean me, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying me and most other people wouldn't care about those 20 years at the end if it means having 20 great years beforehand that otherwise you might spend selling insurance policies or some shit.

This was done for months/years at a time, right? Do you guys think this could improve someone's lifts and/or recovery ability if done for a shorter time, say 1-2 months a year? Or would it really only prove effective in the long run? At some point down the line I think this would be interesting to try out, but I don't think I could handle doing it for much longer than that.

Yeah, definitely. I've found that doing nothing but singles made my maxes go way up for a month or two - as in 40 pounds on my squat within a month - but after a while it stops working. Broz's program has more variety than that but still what you said sounds like a good idea.
