Powerlifting is a strength sport consisting of three events: the bench press, the squat, and the deadlift.

clean and jerk and the snatch are actually in Olympic weightlifting but powerlifting resembles olympic weightlifting because both involve lifting weights in three attempts.

Tomthedrumma is right.  Powerlifting = Squat, Benchpress, Deadlift.  Olympic lifting involves Powerclean, Powerclean and Jerk, and Snatch.  As far as getting into the Olympics, I don't really know.  I assume it's the same as every other Olympic sport, you need to be invited.  To get on Powerlifting World's Teams you need to win 1st place at a national level meet, and get invited by the current chairmen of that federation.

Yes, clean and jerk and snatches are the only two lifts in olympic weightlifting, but there also used to be clean and press but it was discontinued because of difficulties in judging proper form  Wink

The Clean and Jerk and Snatch are the two contested lifts. Power Cleans, Hang Cleans, Power Snatches, Front Squats, etc.. are auxiliary lifts used for assistance in training the C&J and Snatch. They can also be used by non-Weightlifters as additions to their respective programs
