20-Rep Squats. You load up you 10RM and Squat it for a set of twenty, never racking the bar but taking rest at the top of the movement between sets and breathing heavily basically.

'You load up you 10RM and Squat it for a set of twenty'

Doesn't that defeat the identification of it as 10RM?

Yes, speaking purely logically that is true but there are so many factors that go into a Squat 10RM other than strength particularly mental toughness and resistance to fatigue. Plus you don't do them straight the 20 rep squat set alone takes over 3 minutes.

With breathing squats, you take 3 deep breaths between each rep, which roughly constitutes a 10 sec pause, making this, essentially, a rest-pause set (more like 20 sets of 1 than 1 set of 20), which allows for larger motor units to be recruited for a longer period (they get time to partially recover between reps). But you should remember that it's brutally hard and works for a relatively short time (adaptation comes soon). Wink

The names of the game are effort and progressive poundages, but the effort must manifest itself in terms of progressive poundages. Judge the effectiveness of your training by the poundages you are moving, in good form, not by effort per se.

Wow that sounds like it would get you panting like a dog in a car in arizona. I think i get enough of that from regular 10RM squats.
