I HATE deadlifts.  HATE them.  Every single time I do them, my lower back kills, my shoulders feel like they're going to pop out, and i barley feel anything in my legs.

Can't say I understand, but I can appreciate--I hate bench press.

(but I love deadlift)

probally using bad form, or too much weight, get an experianced person to help you out, videos sometimes aren't enough.

you can also try a belt, but im against them.

There's Better exercises for shoulders than deadlift.

Anyways, i'm not an idiot, I don't want to give up deadlifts because I know how important they are.  It's just the fact that I tried to do 145lb deadlift today and it just put too much strain on my back.  I think I was using too much weight, because I know my form is good.  Back straight, bend knees, barbell along legs.

I can only think of one exercise that puts a tremendous stress on your shoulders, being the military press (excluding those other olympic lifts). I don't know about you, but I don't know many people that can military press what they deadlift. Oh and to clarify, I meant traps when I said a little bit of deltoid when I said shoulders.

As for putting strain on your back, you need to realize that although some of your muscles (legs and shoulders) can handle the weight, you may have other muscles that are lagging (core) and can't handle that load quite yet. You need to start at a weight that your core and back can handle and not just jump the gun because its easy for your legs to lift.

i feel tired just thinking about doing them since you have to be pretty careful with the form... but they really do add weight to you.   you'll stimulate all sorts of muscles you normally don't stress
