Before

you should take in carbs, + protein, the reason for carbs is because its good to get in some fresh unused forms of energy, the protein is to be taken
45-60 mins before workout, so your body has protein ready in your system for after yur workout to start the recovery process...

After
And you should take protein and carbs after because you need to replace glycogen which has been depleted from your muscles when you are working out, you need to get this simple carb, back into the muscles, to start the recovery process...and protein is needed to also give the muscles protein to heal, as they crave protein after a workout to rebuild themselves stronger and better, where you have ripped down the muscle tissue.

I usually eat oatmeal and drink milk (light stuff) before my work out and after I drink a high protein shake with a lot of carbs in it.  Stay safe!

protein is meal replacement and since its fast digesting its ideal for  post workout. it recommends that if you read labels too. but yea other than workout just eat normal food. dont depend on whey as protein source.make sure you get your protein for every meal
