They say there is no need, and I do need some muscle mass, so my question is will body weighted exercises EVER give me some muscle mass, and I do need a complete workout based on body weighted and compound exercises.... I do know push ups/pull ups/crunches...what else...o0

My Goals: -Do 100 proper push ups at once.(50 now) -Do 20 proper pull ups. -Get in shape and be fit. -Abstaining for 40 days :/

You don't "need" mass unless you are trying to go up in weight class I guess. Combat sports are about strength, stamina, agility, explosiveness, etc. Size matters not. If you want a real answer ask the questions on the Ross Training forums. www.rosstraining.com.

You can gain mass from bodyweight exercises. Just as with machines, bands, freeweights or any other resistance intensity is a big factor and the process takes time (months). In addition to push ups, pull ups, and crunches, you can do bicycles, dips, lunges, squats, planks, leg lifts, burpees, and a host of other bodyweight resistance and plyometric exercises that will benefit MMA. HIIT cardio/aerobic exercise is also a great addition for MMA. If you work with a partner, there are even more resistance exercises that can be done.

He does have a life outside of his MMA training incase you didn't realise, he might want to look better for himself and he's fully entitled to do so. On topic, yes bodyweight will add mass, free weights however will add more mass as a general rule.

Just doing body weight exercises will be good enough for getting a good look, remember with close combat like MMA you need stamina and the more mass you add the harder it is going for you to be able to last in a round because your heart needs to pump more blood and if your heart isnt strong enough your going to tire out real fast

Mike Tyson never fought Mohammed Ali  Pwned, from what i understand MMA is mixed combat fighting style so it uses more body parts so more work is need from your heart, where as boxing is more arms so less parts to pump blood to and less work for your heart.

Of course you can gain size for non-MMA purposes, but you should train differently than we who want size do. Bodyweight is the best option here. I'm guessing the right way to go is that you do exercises like pushups, pullups, burpees, dips, bicycle crunches, inverted rows, walking lunges etc. Instead of doing them 3x10 or whtvr, you do them in supersets or circuits etc. So that you're pushing your endurance in these compounds, doing cardio at the same time, and practicing the mental aspect of keep on going without rest. Yes doing 100 pushups isn't great for mass, but you will gain some mass over time, and your body will probably look really good, albeit not bulging with muscle. Chest&lat workout: Pullup-variation (video linked below which shows some interesting variations) Pushup-variation (clap pushups, hip pushups, one-handed pushup, planche pushups) Hanging leg-raises Inverted row (not many variations you can do here I'm afraid) Decline pushup-variation (staggered decline pushups, increased ROM, one-handed) Bicycle crunches Legs&arms workout: Pistols Dips / Close grip pushups (easier to get variation on) Walking lunges (longer steps for glutes) Chinups Burpees Planks Could be done as a complex, supersets, circuit, etc.

Sometimes weights are needed in MMA training, so I don't see why they are getting angry. Don't let your looks be your primary concern, like the other guys have said, speed and endurance are key to MMA and should be the main focus of your training. However, strength is also important, and that were weights come in. In addition to my conditioning workouts, I do strength training as well. The stronger you are the easier it is to power and oppenent to the mat and lock him in submission and get the tap or simply deliver a knock-out strike. In my opinion, guys that say you only need body weight exercises are only covering part of the picture. Throw in some weight lifting, it does help.
