Hello,

I injured my right knee playing football a few weeks ago. I can walk normally but can't jog for more than a few seconds or sprint at all. However I have been able to safely do my pull-ups, push-ups and crunches 3 times a week.

I am wondering if anybody can tell me if there are any effective cardio exercises that I can do without using my bad knee, that will get my heart rate going.

   Thanks.

I tore my ACL playing paintball and am currently going through post-op recovery - so I feel your pain.

What I've done is taken a chair and placed it in front of a support beam in my basement (any pole type object would do), and wrapped a resistance band around it and shadow box while holding into it. Makes it a bit more difficult, and a little less hard on the joints - gets my heart rate up to around 130bpm if I'm really pushing it. Not the best, but it's better than nothing for sure!  Another one I got from either a post on these boards or BB.com, but its just arm sprints. Just rapidly moving your arms back and forth (I add resistance bands to these as well) like you sprinting. Of course resistance bands aren't needed, use em' if you need em'.

While these are no replacement for running/biking (for me anyway) they're some avenues you can look too for keeping your cardio activity up.

    Get better!

if your at a gym there usually is some kinda arm cardio machine.ours is called a topx but i dont know its proper name. swimming was a good suggestion, you can put a float under your legs to support your body then just use your upper body

What about a scooter?  Can your right leg support you while you use the left to push off?

It's a long shot, but kayaking is great if you can find one and a place to use it.  Wonderful core workout too.

    How about using a crosstrainer?

Basically you don't need to actually use your legs - you can just use your arms!

Mainly cardio is about raising your heart rate. So it doesnt have to be using your legs exactly.
