Personally I think heavy bags are better used for strength training so you can hit harder. I recommend a speed bag or a bag that's 80% of your weight for good cardio. Also if you get a speed bag always aim for the very middle, otherwise you'll start aiming higher and higher and brake your knuckles.

~I love my heavy bag it's one of my favorite workouts. I do 4 rounds of 3 min with 1 min rest of heavy bag, 4 rounds of speed bag, 4 rounds of double end bag. (If you dont want to spend on a round timer There are free apps for Iphone/droid) You could add jump rope in there but i'm usually wiped after the 3. If you've never hit a bag before get some instruction. Just like anything it takes a little bit to get proficient with the bags. Keep in mind you can hurt or even break your wrist if you hit the bag wrong. Get good gloves and use wraps. ~Best of luck

i just got a heavy bag but havn't used it yet but when i used the one at the gym i just kept punching it and it was good cardio as my heart was beating really hard and its easy for cardio when your still out of shape, but when you are in shape its more for strength training but if you punch or kick it enough you can get it up to cardio time.
