Well I've been doing jump rope probably since I was 14 (now 19) for serious exercise and as I recall I could only do it for 2 minutes straight. But over the years I have improved to a level that the first 10 minutes I feel absolutely no fatigue. Also, when I started I had very bad coordination but now I think I can join a gymnastic team (well maybe not that coordinated!). My intentions for doing it were for increasing my vertical leap. And I personally think jump rope was the best thing for it.

During the winter I replace my running with jump roping. 2 hours on Monday and Friday, 1 hour on T-W-TR.
Don't be too concerned about your time. When I first started I was a 200 lb smoker, I couldn't go 20 min. (or run 20 min either =/)
Just be concerned with being consistent with all your workouts, you'll get better. Patience and persistence!

You responded to a post 18 months old. He can either do it for a long time now or gave up long ago!!

Yes of course you can. Cardio can be done for fitness and to keep routine, not necessarily to just burn calories.
