because on that calculator, the result is not reflective of a theory which may dictate that time in the "zone" would burn more.

    e.g.

    10 mins + 10 mins + 10 mins

will give you the same calorie calculation as if you type in

    30 mins

So i guess if i go straight by that calculator, then the answer to the thought experiment is they will both burn equal cals?

That may be the case. And with less fatigue related problems.  However, we need something more concrete information before we can generalize on that conclusion.

Equal to me. What's important is running > not running and which one will you actually stick to?

Definitely the interval method is easier on me

This is what i've been doing since September

But i felt like i was cheating by cutting the time up so much...

But if you guys really think its the same -- then this is good news alright

I am not sure, but I would tend to say Adam.

Think about it this way: if you run for 50 minutes continuously, it would take more of an effort to keep the same speed throughout (so more energy).

If you break it up, you have had time to rest and can reach and maintain the same speed for a much shorter time more easily.

Don't know if it's a good analogy, but I'm pretty sure it would not be the same if you did 1 rep of some weight exercise 5 different times throughout the day than if you did 5 reps consecutively.

More effort doesn't mean more energy consumption though. If you ran the same distance in 20 minutes instead of 50, that would be another story because of factors such as increased EPOC due to more intense workout, but doing the same thing in divided fashion doesn't affect the total energy consumption. And muscle building is different from burning fat, so it is not good analogy.

Well scooby says afterburn really kicks in after 30-35min so... I'd say it's better to do cardio in one session.

It takes 35 minutes every day of the week in his example.
