I am not sure, but I would tend to say Adam.
Think about it this way: if you run for 50 minutes continuously, it would take more of an effort to keep the same speed throughout (so more energy).
If you break it up, you have had time to rest and can reach and maintain the same speed for a much shorter time more easily.
Don't know if it's a good analogy, but I'm pretty sure it would not be the same if you did 1 rep of some weight exercise 5 different times throughout the day than if you did 5 reps consecutively.
More effort doesn't mean more energy consumption though. If you ran the same distance in 20 minutes instead of 50, that would be another story because of factors such as increased EPOC due to more intense workout, but doing the same thing in divided fashion doesn't affect the total energy consumption. And muscle building is different from burning fat, so it is not good analogy.
