Hey everyone,

I was just wondering. Which is better cardio to lose weight?
Doing 30 min of jogging and doing 25 min of cycling right after,
or only cycling for 55 min?

By doing the first I burn more calories, but lose my heart rate when I switch.

So... I don’t know. What do you guys think?

If you want to lose weight, you want to burn more calories. So I would suggest the jogging and then the cycling and to not focus on heart rate so much if weight loss (and not just fitness) is your goal.

    That makes sense.
I'm going to do my cardio right now!

    Thanks for the advice!

You have to create a calorie deficit to lose weight regardless of what you do in the gym. Keep that in mind as well.

Check out this article about Cardio for Weight Loss:

And yes, as RCowley mentions, remember that no matter how many calories you burn, if you do not support it with a proper meal plan, it's all going to be a waste of time. Good luck! Grin

    Thanks.

I already have a meal plan. It took me 2 months to adjust it so it felt good.
Maybe I will post it sometime because there's always room for improvement.

@ Skorpiozi, thanks for the link. I knew most of it already.
However, the fat burning zone doesn't exist? Why do all the machines at the gym tell me otherwise?
Is this really true? I've read many sources telling me it's important to focus on.

I will start another topic about this.

It does really exist, but it isn't a magic zone that you must stay in. Higher heart rates can burn fat too - it's just the "fat burning zone" is often one which people find sustainable - they can keep exercising longer and burn more calories from a higher workload overall.

An example. Running 6mph puts you at 50% max heart rate (mhr) and you can keep it up for an hour, burning maybe 700 Calories. Running at 9mph puts you at 85% mhr and is too strenuous to maintain for more than 20mins, thus in those 20mins you might be able to burn 350 Calories.

See what I mean? Heart rate isn't everything - and especially not when comparing different exercises. For me, I can have a relatively low heart rate and jog for an hour, burning 1000 Calories. However on an ERG (rowing machine) to get 1000 Calorie/hr burn rate gives me a very high heart rate and is a workload I can't sustain for more than 10mins.

Yeah, that's basically it. And also, higher heart rate training works a little more on your cardiovascular endurance rather than burning fat (it still does, of course, but not optimal). In a nutshell, there is no magic zone, but to burn fat you do not need to go all out.

I see now. Still it isn't explained very well on a lot of (Dutch) sites I visited.

Thanks you guys for the advice. Such good feedback always cranks up my motivation to give it my best.
