Hi I'm 17 and following scooby's advanced workout plan as of a few days ago where i felt i needed to progress from advanced-intermediate. My goal is to gain a fair bit of muscle but keep my body fat low.

I follow a pretty  healthy diet with about 6 meals with 15-20g protein a day which i feel is enough for me as i only weigh 125 pounds. The problem is sometimes a "meal" for me is a protein shake and an apple or banana, something along those lines. And here lies the problem, i just read on the "bulking up" section..

"In a nutshell, here’s what you need.Protein every 2-3 hours from the moment you wake up till the moment you go to bed.  Total protein approx 1g per pound of bodyweight per day so a 180lb man would have 180g protein per day (30g protein per meal, 6 meals).  OK, that’s only 720 calories but a 180 lb man needs 2700 calories a day to maintain weight (2200cals to lose a pound fat per week)"

So what will happen if i don't reach the required amount of calories but do reach the required amount of protein? Will i lose muscle or fat? (considering my fat is pretty low already)

and will this slow down the process of me gaining muscle, should i be eating more?

I think i need to start tracking my calorie intake  Undecided and sorry to be a little clueless, i'm fairly new to bodybuilding   Roll Eyes

The real answer is it depends on your current body composition, how high the deficit is and training workload.

At your weight, I would not start to track your calories. I would simply eat plenty throughout the day and keep it moderately healthy; if anything keep a slight surplus as you sound like you err on the side of skinny/underweight rather than overweight or any excess fat.

Don't forget that recommendation is for someone who is a bodybuilder - we're talking older, much more muscular and under an intensive training regime. You can easily get away with 2-3 meals a day and grow comfortably, you don't need this optimal nutrition like someone who is reaching their limits of muscularity and using every trick they can to keep going.
