I have two brands at home right now. One says 35 minutes, one says 25 minutes only. From personal experience I found that 25mins are definitely not enough, 35mins, however, got the job done.

You could also try instant rice, just pop it into the microwave and you're good to go. But be careful, I think in some countries instant rice is just pre-cooked rice but still needs to be heated up in boiling water for some minutes, just check the packages.

In order to make it taste better try to use fresh cut salsa - makes everything taste great Cheesy Also, rice mostly is used as a side dish so you might wanna eat it with some meat, then your taste buds won't fully concentrate on the rice.

When I make rice I usually make some eggs (hard boiled cause i'm lazy) and add some wasabi peas, carrots, asparagus, and any other vegetable I can find. Delicious. The wasabi peas really add a lot of flavor. Not terrible for calories either. 120 calories for 30 grams. Egg yolks help with the flavor too.

    Ate this just now:
    90 grams rice - 320 calories
    2 eggs - 140 calories
    30 grams wasabi peas - 120 calories
Bunch of carrots and asparagus ~ 40 calories

620 calories total. Just over a 1/5 of my daily intake. Pretty big meal, but healthy and yummy.

Check instructions; some brown rice is parboiled, which literally means 'partially boiled', and thus requires a shorter cooking time than non-parboiled rice.  That's why some brands of rice have different cooking times than other brands.  I think parboiling also increases the glycemic index of the rice which results in faster digestion and a spike in glucose levels.  I could be wrong, but for that reason I avoid buying parboiled rice and look for brown rice with the longest cooking times.

As far as flavor, I add various varieties of Mrs Dash salt free seasoning to the rice before I cook it in the microwave (favorite is lemon-pepper).  Add quite a bit; makes it taste pretty much like boxed rice that comes with those seasoning packets except without enough sodium to cause a stroke.

I put extra virgin olive oil on mine and it tastes great. Combine it with chicken and salsa and you'll barely notice the taste.
