I see some people say like 2 cups of water with each meal...is this really necessary? It's nice not having to piss all the time.

I think scooby gave an answer to this once. You know you are drinking enough if you have to go every 45 minutes.

You drink enough water when you're not thirsty at any time. When being thirsty it actually is too late already, as thirst is a first sign of slight dehydration. Of course, you're not in danger when feeling thirsty but your body signals that you'd better get some water.
Always keep a bottle with you, you'll soon start to drink it automatically. For example when I'm at my computer I constantly grab my water bottle and take a sip or two. Once it's empty I refill it quickly (as where I'm living water out of the faucet is just fine).
Water is important for many reasons. We consist mainly of water so we obviously have to watch for a constant supply of it. I drink up to two gallons a day(but that's because in RSA it's pretty hot and very humid). One gallon should be fine.
Moreover, water helps you to feel full quicker when drunk before a meal and also helps you to suppress hunger until your next meal.

My rule of thumb is the same as Scooby's, as long as urine is clear or almost clear you're drinking enough. If it's dark, then you need to drink more. Personally, I drink a gallon a day and half a gallon if I'm consuming green tea because of the caffeine.

[/quote Thats a common misconception - Think about it from an evolutionary point of view it doesn't make sense that your body would send signals that you are thirsy when its too late. http://www.gustrength.com/physiology:fluid-intake-dehydration-and-exercise-part-iv

as long as urine is clear or almost clear you're drinking enough. If it's dark, then you need to drink more. Very good rule. Listen to your body and watch the signs. The color, amount, and frequency of urination will tell you all you need to know about your hydration level. If you pee a good amount of light colored, odorless urine every few hours, you are fine. If your urine is dark, has a strong smell, and you only go a couple of times a day, you need to drink more. If it is perfectly clear and you pee like a racehorse every hour, you can probably safely back off some.

There is no way you can give a quantity of water that is "right" because it depends on so many variables. I get really mad when i see recommendations like "you should drink XX glasses of water" - PILLOW SCREAM! As I always say, drink until your pee is clear. This will usually mean you have to pee every 15-30 minutes which can reduce productivity but who cares

It should be a gallon a day and a gallon and a half when consuming caffeine. Second, Scooby, I never gave the recommendation or even used should. I said that I personally drink that much. I guess I'll add here that it works for me so they can see if that works (although I thought it was implied). On a side note, I am glad I was able to get you to PILLOW SCREAM:) LOL! On a more serious note, a person can die (and has) from drinking too much water so there is such a thing as overdoing it.

lol you have to drink a lot of water to die from it (kidney failure). Wasn't there a mom who was in a water drinking contest to win a Wii or some crazyness...

Yep, on the radio. Someone else died from a bladder problem when drinking too much water.

My urologist gave me a rule that I've been sticking to daily for about a year now - Body weight in pounds, divided by 2 = the number of ounces I should be drinking daily. So since I'm 235 lbs, I shoot for about 120 ounces per day.
I found that once I started that, I pee about every 45 minutes and it's almost clear. Also super easy to remember.

I remember reading that you should shoot for about 2/3oz of water for every 1lb of body mass. This makes me have to go every 30 minutes, which really sucks when you are on a bus for 1.5 hours twice a day.

I drink like other mammals like myself. I drink when I'm thirsty. I drink till I'm satisfied. I am not a desert animal, I don't need to drink tons of it and store it, neither do I have mechanisms to go with very little water. I don't let myself walk around thirsty as hell, but I don't get myself bloated with water either. I think peeing every 15-30 minutes is excessive. I'm not a dog to pee on every corner and under every tree I see when my girlfriend walks me. I was watching a reality show a few years ago, a man wanted a divorce because his wife had to pee every 20 minutes. "I can't go out with her, I can't do anything. She always has to pee." But she had a disorder. I don't think we should emulate and mistakenly call this healthy.

I'm with dodo on this.
Having to go every 30-45 minutes is incredibly annoying, especially if you're busy with something like school or work.
I just drink after meals and workouts, and always try to have a bottle with me in case I get thirsty.
