Natural peanut butter is good but all dependent on your diet limitations and quantity. One or two servings a day is good but if you are eating too much it will get fattening real fast.

I normally have it on toast for breakfast... Never eat it more than once a day though. Great for protein, bad for fat.

indeed peanut butter is primarily used as a source of GOOD FATS ,coming from peanuts, that has also a good amount of protein.

you shouldn't look at it that way.... if it fits in your nutritional program, you're alright:) I for example eat 8 tablespoons a day...

    PB is good or  Evil
Use it wisely, its great for a pre workout foosd.take some hearts of celery and fill in the groove with some organic almond butter or peanut butter. This snack really travels well in Tupperware and makes a terrific pre-workout snack. Why? The celery has fiber and nutrients (including calcium and vitamin A) and a ridiculously low 6 calories per medium stalk. The nut butter has protein and fat. The overall calories are low, and this really fills you up without slowing you down, providing great "slow-release" energy for a terrific workout. Enjoy

I agree I mean as long as you buy a good one and not jiff or skippy or that other junk, then even 8tbsp wont hurt yu at all. My brother puts 1/3 cup in his protein shake everyday and eats more through out the day as well.

how can you tell peanut butter is natural?

If there's "sugar" in it, it is not natural. If it's "american"-style, forget it, it won't be natural either.Smiley

Real natural peanut butter has no more than two ingredients: Peanuts (duh) and maybe salt. I find it funny that it actually tastes far better than those sugary greasy so called peanut butters we grew up on. There are a couple of companies out there that are using a process that grinds the peanuts super fine, they settle out much less than other natural peanut butters. You still have to give them a stir once in a while, but they never completely separate. Even those that separate just take a couple of moments to remix. If you want lower fat, you can actually pour off a portion of the oil that separates and use it for cooking (high smoke point). Of course this makes the end product thicker.

Beware of some "natural" peanut butters that contain hydrogenated oils or "natural" sweetners, they are no better than the leading brands of peanut butter. Some of the national brands have taken to marketing by sticking an earthtone lable on the jar and using sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup and calling it "natural". The term "natural" is unregulated and quite meaningless, so read the whole label before making your choice. Smuckers has a real "natural" peanut butter that is just peanuts and salt, is sold nationally through many grocers and big box stores, comes in creamy and chunky, and also has a USDA certified organic version, at a decent price.

Back to the original subject of this thread, we need to stop trying to classify foods as good or bad. It just isn't that simple. We need to look at them more as pieces of a puzzle. It's our job to look at the nutrients provided and piece them together with other foods to complete our nutritional picture. Peanut butter offers a lot of useful nutrients, including some mono and polyunsaturated fats.

Yeah the peanut and salt ones do actually taste better tha ones with sugar. They taste nuttier and are much healthier. Myrule of thumb is if there is no oil on top, then its no good.
