I generally don't snack but when I do I have a real weakness for pretzels (I love popcorn too but i can't find instant 100% corn kernel popcorn).
Should I just worry about daily macro's or can I get a slight use out of my beloved pretzels by eating them before/after a workout, or is there
no real beneficial time?

Most packaged pretzels are super salty, which is not good for you. The rest is just carbs, which is fine, but if you intent on snacking on them, you need to include them into your daily calorie calculation; especially if you're trying to shed weight.

Other than that, they should be fine, as long as you control how much you eat. Ideally, air popped popcorn would be a MUCH better alternative. Just get yourself one of those electrical air poppers. They're quite cheap. And regular kernals shouldn't be a problem to find in most large supermarkets.

I mainly snack on air popped popcorn, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds. I have a foreman grill, and I roast (or grill) half a palmful of each seed) for about 6 minutes. They're freaking delicious, and get I get my good fats from them. With my popcorn, I normally add half a teaspoonful of extra virgin olive oil after popping, then sprinkle some chilli powder, paprika, or some random herbs (like oregano) on them and shake the whole thing up. It makes a great little healthy snack. Again, just make sure the calories are in line with your daily meal plan.

Also, fats will make you feel fuller for longer, so I would drop the pretzels and switch to either seeds or olive oil popcorn.

One other thing while we're on topic, does sodium in general correspond to retaining water, or is it unrelated?
I've heard that sodium isnt a massive issue in a general sense, unless you're looking at competing

There's nothing wrong with a pretzel every now and then. They sure would deliver you some pre workout carbs and the salt on them is nothing to worry about all too much either. Sodium is an electrolyte we lose during strenuous exercise so you actually have an excuse to eat them haha As with everything, don't over do it but if you account for the calories you should be fine. I drink a liter of iced tea (the bought one full of chemicals, that is) post workout for my sugar as well, just can't live without that stuff  Cheesy
