Recently I had a pain and cramping in my stomach, I got worried thinking that I have kidney stones. I had just consumed protein on a day I worked out. But I went to the doctors and it ended up not being anything serious, I didn't have kidney stones. But my doctor said to drink more water, more than 2 liters a day, and said to drink some orange juice to prevent kidney stones. After the doctor visit I became obsessed about kidney stones anyway, and started to read a lot of sites..Mostly learned to drink plenty of water to prevent stones. Still, I worry because some sites keep saying too much meat or protein causes kidney stones. But meat, and also eggs, milk etc are my main sources of protein.I'm 26 years old and been into bodybuilding for about 2 and half years, I have had no stones in the past, and I don't think anyone in my family has had them before(at least not that I heard) yet, I'm still worried about all my protein and salt intake. So I'm sort of looking for someone to tell me my new fear of getting stones is irrational as long as I drink enough water.  I recently had started drinking casein protein before bed, but now I noticed it has 60% calcium, so I'm thinking of going back to the regular whey protein which only has 10 %. Any suggestions on  kidney stone preventing + bodybuilding diet?
Theirs a lot of stuff on the internet about trying to prevent stones but I'm also concerned about bodybuilding at the same time. Plus I figured their may be people here with experience.

Unless you eat a LOT of protein and don't drink very much water at all, you will not get kidney stones.  Your fear is indeed somewhat irrational, not to an extreme point, but nonetheless.

Don't worry about casein vs. whey, you'll be fine if you prefer having that before bed.  I eat 200g+ protein per day and I'm fine.  Granted I drink a lot of water, but there are days I don't and I haven't seen any problems yet.

i drink a gallon of water a day all body builders should be, most americans eat 1.5g of protein per pound of body weight and drink little water unless you consider the 1.6 cans of soda as water, trust me you are more likely to get a kidney stone eating like every american then you are with a healthy clean body builder diet.

Thanks for the replies. Makes me feel safer lol.

After writing that last message, I started to think of a how I ate before I got into bodybuilding. 2 to 3 monster energy drinks a day, a lot of coffee , large soda with every meal, mostly fast food burger stuff and very, very little water. And back then I had no problems. Now I never drink soda.. I only have water, milk and and coffee (starbucks double shot). So I'm hoping that if I didn't get any problems back then, then maybe my chances are much less now, even though now I eat way more protein. I also haven't heard if bodybuilders often had kidney stones  problems. Reading online, a lot of people claim they got them from drinking a lot of soda and no water. So when i had read that one out of every ten men get kidney stones, I wanted to know, the one of every ten men, are these people that drink soda all day or what. No info provided.

One of the MDs that deployed with us stated he believes kidney stones is largely genetics.

If you ever have pain and cramping in your stomach it is 100% NOT A KIDNEY STONE.

Kidney stone pain (aka renal colic) in the upper lateral back and radiates inferiorly and anteriorly to the groin. The pain is described as "the worst pain I have ever had" and "worse than childbirth pain", 10 out of 10 on a pain scale. When you are passing a stone you are keeled over on the floor and are unable to have a lucid conversation.

Hydration is number one in preventing kidney stones.

I used to eat 400-500g of protein on a daily basis when I was trying to build muscle (I gained a lot of fat as well...but I did get muscle) and I drank about 2 gallons of water a day.  I never got a kidney stone or any stomach/kidney problems for that matter.

Yeah, that is why I am terrified of getting kidney stones. Everyone says its the worst pain human beings can go through.
Since I made that post, I have found out that their is something wrong with me, just not sure what. It's not kidney stones. I had a blood test and the results said my glucose levels were 129. So I'm having a diabetes scare now. Although I been a little sick lately, I'm wondering if an infection caused my sugar to rise. Either way, I think I read somewhere that diabetics have a higher chance of getting kidney stones..not good.

You sure? When my ex-best friend whom I haven't seen in at least a few years, was 13, I believe, she had the kidney stones. When I was playing with her a few times during this, she screamed in pain like a banshee half the time. Since her Aspurgurs got so severe, I have not seen her in a long while. I think her parents sheltering her so much played a big role in this development.
