Hi!

I've been experimenting with wheat gluten for a while and this is what I came up with:

30g Wheat Gluten
1 Banana
300ml Low Fat Milk (substitute with Soy Milk if you're vegan)
20g Baking cocoa
Desired amount of any sweetener (some artificial stuff in my case)

Nutrition facts:
450.9 kcal
39g Protein

This could easily be the cheapest and most delicious shake I can think of - mainly because what gluten is a very cheap source of
protein (0.13€ or 0.17$ for 25g of protein here in Germany). And since the protein from wheat doesn't have a complete amino acid profile, I added the milk (instead of water).
And the baking cocoa adds some intense chocolate flavor (and some fiber) to the shake and it covers the wheat gluten's weird flavor. It also adds a good amount of fat, primarily saturated fats I believe although I'm really not sure whether this is a good thing or not. But I think you could even reduce the amount of cocoa and it still would be good. Also, this shake is incredibly smooth and creamy - due to the frozen bananas and of course the wheat gluten which thickens the shake up alot so this shake fills you up.

Have fun with this!

I am from Belgium, I found some here (German shop).

Edit: If not, in organic-health shops it can be found easily, or at least ordered (but usually not that cheap).

    Gern geschehen Wink

@Danet: Man that's even cheaper than where I buy it ^^ thanks Smiley

I'm glad you guys like my idea. Just don't forget to add another source of protein since wheat gluten by itself doesn't have a very high biological value otherwise the shake would probably be too 'inefficient' (in terms of protein to calorie ratio).

    Cheers!

Thanks a lot for that tip: sounds like a great shake.

For those who don't know, Wheat gluten (sometimes called Saitan) can also be an excellent meat substitute in lots of dishes.  It has a firmer, fleshier texture than Tofu and helps you avoid too much Soy (if that concerns you) and offers a good protein alternative source.

You can buy it in good foodstores or make your own (google it and you'll find lots of recipes)

Saitan chili sin carne with a variety of beans, served with brown rice or quinoa is an excellent meal - low fat, good balance of carbs and a variety of protein sources, with lots of fibre and a host of other nutrients.

As long as you don't have a wheat allergy - All hail Saitan!  Evil

Exactly Smiley My mother has been experimenting with that stuff too and she's been coming up with some cool stuff like vegetarian sausage etc. Maybe I'll post a recipe if I she tells me the ingredients Wink
