Are they necessary to build muscle? I already have a solid diet and currently having protein shakes after a workout. What are your thoughts?

AAs aren't needed as supplements if you eat a halfway intelligent diet. As you describe, a diet with enough protein on a daily basis, and especially with a PWO shake, is plenty. If you're really wanting to use them or already bought some, some folks take a few before their workout but IMO it's focusing on the last 1%.

Most questions you have about building muscle is answered in this article.

Getting big, strong muscles and losing fat is simple but it's not easy! To accomplish anything worthwhile in life, you need a firmly fixed goal; willpower; a high tolerance for pain.

your body already makes 11 amino acids when you eat food with the 9 essential ones ( one of the essentials your body makes but not enough) amino acid supps are a waste waste waste.

you do not need any kind of amino acid supplements if you are eating protein 1 g per pound  of  body weight

foods like chicken , fish , eggs , milk are complete source of protein and have all essential and non essential amino acid profile in them
