Do you still take in the creatine even when you mix it up with your post work out protein shake or is it better to take separately?

It's fine to take creatine with your whey protein shake. Creatine needs to be taken with something that spikes up your insulin. Whey does spike it up, so it's fine.

The problem is when you don't workout. Most people take creatine with water, which is a waste of creatine.

I take it on days I workout: I put 5 gr of creatine in my mouth and drink it up with whey protein after my workout. I don't like it mixed inside the shake, cuz this way you might not get all of it...
Days when I don't workout: 5 gr of creatine with apple or grape juice first thing in the morning.

Yeah take it with your shake. I personally prefer high carb, high protein based pre-workout or during workout drink. Creatine taken with carbs and proteins cause less upset stomach and ensure good workout.

I usually dissolved it in my post lunch coffee. First of all, the myth of caffeine and creatine diminish their effects is completely wrong. Second, I found hot beverages to be the only beverages where my creatine actually dissolved. Third, whey and sugar do spike your insulin no doubt, but you'd need hundreds of carbs to create an insulin spike high enough to actually help absorb it. That's hundreds of calories just from sugar for 5 little grams of creatine. However, like most of you already said, both, carbs and protein spike insulin together and each meal should contain plenty of either one. So each time you eat you spike your insulin quite nicely already, best time to take your creatine! Saves you a couple hundred calories as well.

I never seem to manage to "fully dissolve" my creatine in water. Some of it just sinks to the bottom.
