I have bought an Optimum Nutrition Gold Standart Whey Protein around 2 years ago but I never had to chance to start to work out. So, I started to work out again and I wanted to have some of the protein BUT the expiration date is February of 2011. I have NEVER opened the seal and kept it in a closet in my room. It is expired a year ago.
I have never used protein powders before so I don't know if it smells funny or not.
I am broke and I will intensely work out in following months.
Can I use it? Does it go bad by any chance?
I don't want to dump it but I don't want to get sick either.
If you have experience (used expired protein powders, real knowledge, biology major etc.) with this, please REPLY

DO NOT EAT EXPIRED FOOD.
Thanks for the obvious. I searched on google, some people say that it's powder, and it's dehydrated so it won't go bad. It just loses it's effect over time. I was asking IF someone else on the forum tried it.

Don't worry. As long as it's powder and not caked up or a solid block when you open it, its fine! Take it! I've taken plenty of expired supplements and even medicines that were expired without one problem ever.

If it has not been oppened, it shouldn't be bad. Mine reads, the expiration date, It also reads expiration date for unoppened bags. Which is 2 years more than the expiration date for oppened whey. ^_^ But if you end up in hospital don't blame me.

Do what you think is best. Almost all foods have expiration, and many are good long past that. There are some dry store goods that I've eaten 5 years after its "best used by" date will no ill effects. I did some googling, and this was the most useful link that I found: http://www.answerfitness.com/642/how-long-will-whey-keep/

If I ever tried whey protein before, I won't hesitate but I'm still waiting someone to say either; I used expired whey and I got sick or I used expired whey nothing happened

I work in a pharmacy/heathfood shop that sells sports supplements. Every now and then stuff goes out of date, and I'm luck enough to have it for free.
Ive eaten everything from beans&rice to whey powder and vitamins, all out of date.
As long as it was sealed it'll be fine. if it was gone off youd know about it. i have underfloor heating in my house, and if you leave any tubs of whey on the floor they go off so quickly. gone off whey powder smells like sour milk. if it smells of the flavour its supposed to be, its cool. ps. this is my first post, been a lurker on this forum for ages!
