staying away from stimulants

today i went to the supplement shop and i happen to see a doctor , he was an old guy
he told all these pre workouts are loaded with caffeine , 1,3 DMAA or taurine - mainly ingredients for energy
it may give you good boost of energy during workout
i have tried few like jack3d , i like jack3d and i like to have 2 cups of black coffee before workout
but this guy tells that it puts more stress on central nervous system, brain over a period of time which is not good in long run
for energy i think some rice or 3 loaf of white bread will give good energy during workouts , i am not going to take coffee or jack3d for a while
no one knows the long term side effects of caffeine and pre workouts , too much caffeine is harmful he added
anyone agrees with him? is caffeine bad in long run? i am thinking of skipping coffee during my work and switch to tea

There is nothing wrong with coffee pre-workout. There comes a point when too much caffeine is a bad thing, but it is rather difficult to get to that point without supplementing it in concentrated forms (like pills, powders etc).
I regularly drink 3-4 cups of black coffee starting a couple hours before my workout, and I feel that it helps my lifts a LOT. That is probably about 300-400mg of caffeine, which is NOT going to kill me at my body-weight (210lbs). Recently read a study that reported that 3mg/kg bodyweight is actually a very effective dose for increasing muscular endurance, and while that pertains more to endurance workouts, it also assists in weight lifting ones.

The amount of caffeine is no more than a cup of coffee, so if he's honestly concerned about you drinking a cup of coffee a couple times per week, he should read up more on how millions of adults survive on way more than that every day. I think it's more likely that he doesn't want you taking supplements that he thinks are a waste of your money at best, and possibly dangerous at worst.
As long as you're eating balanced meals at some point during the day prior to your workout, you should have glycogen stored and ready for use during your workout, so eat whatever you feel is a healthy meal and wait long enough for it to digest a bit and you're set.

OP:
I never tried Jack3d, but I prefer natural over gimmicky products. Although i recently started using Creatine but that's not a stimulant =P
Anyway..
Try picking up a small pack of Matcha green tea. A tea spoon + hot water in the morning should last you all day.
And I typically eat 2 whole wheat bread before work out.
I stay away from coffee, or other stimulants before work out... i find it an over load of energy rather than a steady energy.

I am trying to go off pre-workout stims for a week. I am using this powder called Energy Revitalization. It doesn't contain any CNS stimulates like caffeine but it does have 375 MG of L-Tyrosine which converts into dopamine and norepinephrine and can increase mental alertness. I take an additional 1500 to 2000 mg of L-Tyrosine. The only problem is it's my deload week, so my workouts are not too intense and the volume is fairly low. It's rather mundane. When I begin work, I feel lethargic. It could be from caffeine withdrawal symptoms.
