I think most people here use a protein powder of some kind.  It's hard to get enough protein without getting a lot of calories, or eating chicken breast with every meal.

If you're very strict about nutrition you may not need them, but they make it much much easier.

The purpose of protein powders are to provide you with an easy/fast/cheap source of protein.

I highly encourage the use of protein supplements because it is quite hard to get the recommended amount eating regular foods.
They are not healthy in the long term perspective as they over-clock your kidneys.

Most protein powders are from whey, the cheapest and most abundant source proteins. Whey is a derivative of dairy products. The most complete and healthier sources of protein are from Egg Albumin and Nuts. The worst protein is from Soy because of its estrogenic properties. Your powder should be lean, low in sugar/sweetener, low in cholesterol and sodium, and low in heavy metals (magnesium, aluminum, alkaline, etc.)

I have a protein shake when I wake up along with a fish oil and Multi-V. I have one an hour before I workout and immediately after. I may/may not have one before bed depending on how nutritious my dinner is. I eat my body weight (lbs.) in protein.

Beef (Steak)- excellent source of protein (good) and also an excellent source of fat (bad).

Attention: You MUST drink at least a gallon of water a day if you are supplementing proteins, or you risk irreversible damage to your kidneys.

I typically use it only once a day, and thats post workout.
Mainly what I want to know, is supplements like creatine, jack3d, animal pack, and just other things that bodybuild.com sells are any good. Or are they dangerous in the long term?
I ask because my parents are wanting to buy me something for painting their room.

Not quite true, protein powder is one of the three supplements I recommend

Just not for teens, I think its a waste of money for those under 18.

I think English is his second language, because that first post is hard to understand. When he says "don't have to use these," he's talking about junk like Jack3d.
