Hi, I'm 16, 120lb beginning-intermediate bodybuilder, been working out for about 2 years. I've been taking regular whey protein isolate for about a year now and results have been good but not as expected. I have decided to dig deeper into the world of supplements. On Maximuscle's website they have a huge range of things to buy, and I'm not sure which one(s) to get. I will definitely get some whey protein as that is universally recognised as THE thing for bodybuilders. But there are other things that catch my eye. What does ZMA do? They don't give very good explanations on the website, they just say 'vital for building muscle'. Should I start taking creatine? I've heard about it being some 'monster substance' but not quite sure why. http://www.maximuscle.com/recovermax Recovermax seems very appealing to me as I am always exhausted (more than I should be) after a gym session, even after eating properly and taking whey protein. Is this high carb thing for me? Also, Thermobol: http://www.maximuscle.com/thermobol says it is for fat loss/slimming yet it also says for muscle definition. Do I need this? Some help regarding each of these would be greatly appreciated

What exactly are the proven side effects of creatine? I hear so much bad stuff about it that I'm kind of worried about taking it and what will happen to me

Dehydration is pretty much the only thing you need to be careful about. Make sure to be drinking enough water. You're just starting to lift. You honestly don't need any supplements. When you say "working out for 2 years" - are we talking sofa curls and chest flies, or squats and deadlifts? Start by reading here: http://www.askscooby.com/bulking-up-and-gaining-muscle/new-bulking-up-faq/Do you have access to a squat rack and bench? Do you lift at home? Also, how tall are you?

Teens are not recommended to take supplements except for Whey protein as long as it's purely whey and no other substance in it. Don't be too obsessed with supplements and trying them out cause it 'says so in the label'. I am not really sure about ZMA. All I know it's short for Zinc Magnesium and something that starts with an 'A'. So its just basically minerals. Heard you shouldn't take it with whey protein as calcium will inhibits the effect of it. And for creatine, its perfectly safe and proven for building muscles but unrecommended for teens. If you plan on taking it, make sure to drink adequate amount of water. At LEAST 8 glasses throughout the day. If you don't drink enough water creatine will have some bad-ass effect on your kidneys and livers. Thats the dangerous part of it. Oh, and I had also read that taking creatine in your teens might inhibit the body's natural production of creatine. Numerous studies discouraged it.

@Get Big:, 4-6 hours a week over 3 days in the gym, doing 'curls and flies' although I've started to do squats and rows too. I'm about 163cm = 5ft 5?
I just feel that I need creatine as I get way too tired and fatigued too easily. After the first day of the week, for the next 2 days I can't lift nearly as much as I could on day 1. I do 5 sets of 5-7 reps, and I go to failiure on the last set.
Also, what brand do you guys recommend? I'm in the UK BTW. Maximuscle have 33% off everything so that seems appealing but one of my friends told me about MyProtein which is considerably cheaper. Does the price really define the quality or is it the same stuff?
If I get something like Maximuscle Cyclone or MyProtein Hurricane XS which is protein but also has creatine, would I have to do the whole 'loading' and 'maintenence' phase?

Cyclone is over-priced. There are many similar products which are much more cheaper like Hurricane XS and PhD Synergy-Iso 7. Moreover you are better off buying them in the internet as most shops sell them at a higher price. I recommend www.Monstersupplements.com, ordered from them and arrive the next day. Cheap and reasonable price.

Thanks for the help guys I was going to get Hurricane XS but decided not to due to the difficulties with balancing the proportion of protein to creatine. I got a 2.5kg regular whey protein and 250g creatine from MyProtein, should arrive in a few days

Some help regarding each of these would be greatly appreciated You dont need any supplements. All you need is Whey protein for your extra protein if you cannot get it from food sources, creatine or else you'll have to eat way too much meat and still won't be able to get enought, and coffee for a preworkout. Everything else is really useless... Crap: Multivitamins, you'll pee them away right after you take them. Why do you think your urine is always yellow and it smells very bad? Stop them multivitamins and see the difference... Thermobol: Wtf is that anyway? To me "thermo" sounds like a losing weight thing... this is completely useless. The only thing that this does is wasting your money. If pills for losing weight really help, everyone on the street will be slim. But look around you, 90% of the people are fat. ZMA? Man just keep it simple. The only supplements that build muscle are called Testosterone and HGH. Everything else is the way those magazines and probodybuilders make money with. The ones that help you build muscle are Whey (additional fast digesting protein) and creatine (gives your muscles more energy, more energy = more weight = more volume) Keep it simple
