For somebody trying to bulk, can you just make healthy decisions, get enough food throughout the day, etc? is it necessary to actually calculate the calories needed to gain weight?

No. Moreso if you are confident that you are comfortably consuming more than your TDEE. If you are trying to maintain or lose weight, then counting (if only a rough estimate) would be wise.

In order to bulk, you are correct you'd have to make healthy choices.
I would say you don't have to count calories, just the nutritional facts (i.e fat content, sugar, etc.).

When I started bulk, I just ate a bowl of cereal with yogurt and a tbsp of peanut butter... Packs on maybe 200-300 extra calories which puts me over my TDEE (assuming I'm full). Really, bulking is just eating more (healthy food) than you're supposed to.

Scooby comes up with all these calorie calculators so I'm assuming he wants you to use them and count your caloric intake. That's just my biased opinion.
