Hi guys. I've always wanted to be able to dunk a basketball since I've been a kid. I remember watching the anime Slamdunk in awe and I knew that was something I wanted to do. I even played a little bit of basketball in my middle school days but I was terrible. Long story short, I ended up getting fat and drifted farther and farther away from my goals. Now that I'm back into fitness, I am wondering if there is some way I can achieve this dream of mine (to dunk, I really don't care about getting better at basketball!)

I am 6"1 so I naturally have some advantages that others don't. But my vertical jump is pathetic (with my hand strecthed out I can reach around 100 inches). Since the basketball hoop is typically 10 feet tall, I would say I'd have to increase my jump by at least 20-25 inches to safely dunk. I am dealing with a fair amount of excess fat, so getting rid of that will obviously help (and I am dealing with it slowly). What other ways are there to increase my vertical jump? Also since I am also doing the stronglifts program, so will any kind of side training interfere with my recovery?

Thanks in advance.

stronglifts will defiantly help provided you dont get huge as you'll have really strong legs. Other things like plyos and just trying to jump as high as you can regularly will get you dunking pretty quick. And yea losing the fat will help.
I got pretty close the other year, i was dunking a tennis ball and wasnt really training for it, I tried SL for a few weeks and my vert went up like 2 inches. one of my main problems was not being able to hold the ball in one hand and never developing a technique so that i could balance it in you hand until i was close to the rim.

Plyos are your answer. Maintain a good diet and do plyos regularly. Plyos will burn calories if done with the right amount of intensity, and then with work on your vertical. Make sure you stretch too. Squatting with help.

Wish i'd taken that advice earlier. I tried some "explosive" jumps without warming up and I hurt my hip badly. So much so that 3 days later it is still hurting and i'm not even sure if I want to workout tomorrow. So stupid...

Just be careful. Focus on safety and then speed. I would definitely let it heal and then do plyos.
