Haha MercNil nailed it, to me 10k seems like a pretty big challenge but I guess it's because I'm a sprinter, not a long distance runner Tongue.

Speaking of time, some of the best times in the 10k at my school are in the mid to late 30 minutes which really is amazing!
I decided to take fitness this year to test my endurance, I gotta run the 10k when the class starts so I plan on using this huge amount of time to cut down a bit and be prepared Smiley

I'm gonna be running about 12 kilometers today. Gonna try to do it as fast as possible, if I get in under an hour, I'll get a nice treat, and start trying harder at practice.

how? 10k is like the low end of being endurance athlete... Doesn't even scratch the surface of what true human ability is. I could probably run it in less than 50 minutes and I'm still at the bottom of barrel. You should watch a college cross country meet, the run 8k's like its nothing, some get in below 24 minutes, they run way farther and harder than that at practice too, way harder.

    I watched the 400 Guys run 20 110's Friday.

The First 10 in 12 Flat and the Second 10 in 13 Flat.

    Give it a Try!

Tried it... Not good at sprints at all. I struggle to keep my 100's under 20 when I do them, I give credit to sprinter's, but my coach was a state champion sprinter in high school, but could also run a 5k in 18-19 minutes, and her husband could run a 4:03 mile during college. No, I give credit to sprinters.

People can run 100+ miles in one go. Don't worry about running too much. I doubt many people actually reach that point. Just make sure you eat a lot and sleep.

I don't think they care what they look like, they do what they like to do, because they think it's fun. Why do you have such a complex about endurance running? Your obsession to flame it into the ground and discouraging what people like to do is retarded.

hooahfries I did not mean to offend anyone.

    The Topic is:

We encourage our Track Athletes both Sprinters and Distance Runners to Strength Train.

They are Very Aware that they can "Over Train" by combining too much Running along with too much Weight Training.

They Train Intensely but Smart!  They are monitored closely for signs of Overtraining!

Your athletes probably don't come close to over-training. I'd imagine that most athletes don't, physiologically anyway. A lot of people train un-intelligently and a lot of people burn out psychologically, but that isn't the same thing as over-training. If you want to reach your genetic maximum in terms of size then yeah... running is a bad idea. But so is sprinting - which is more likely to impinge upon your results than long distance steady-state kind of stuff.

Plus... we're built to run long distances. If you aren't doing it then you're missing out. Its quite possible the most enjoyable thing in the world.

I already know I'm not going to change your mind though. We've had this discussion before.

As a distance runner though, I have to agree with Hooahfries' comment. 10k is really not that much. I think my coach is having the team start 13 miles long runs in a few weeks. However, sprinting is also very exhausting, just at a more condensed scale (seconds as opposed to minutes). Anyways, we shouldn't have the conversation about distance, short distance, and over-training. Like Rcowley said, we already had this discussion before, and we've established two solid sides of arguments.  Back to the OP's original post, over-training applies for practically everything (like everyone else before has mentioned).
