Pals,

Let's list some things every serious martial artist should have in their training schedule Smiley

My take:

Conditioning
- Cardiovascular training, endurance & power, weightlifting, explosive training - For legs SPRINTS and JUMPING & upper body plyometrics.
- Hardening forearms, shins, fists & fingers + everything else, breaking things Cheesy

Stretching
- Reaching the maximum level of flexibility, splits and other stuff

Technique
- Punches, kicks, locks, throws, ground fighting, ability to control your and your opponent's BALANCE, BODYCONTROL involving acrobatics, gymnastics, the perfect control of your body

Reaction & mindset

- Sparring

I have been lately trying to focus more on all aspects of MA training but still lacking many things. I haven't find the right mindset to condition my bodyparts yet, I do like fingertip push-ups everyday but the current progress is still in kid's shoes. I also cannot spar anywhere, in capoeira we like spar but it is not similar as sparring in kickboxing. In Bujinkan taijutsu we do henka which is thinking dozens of different variations from one technique example, still pretty far from sparring. Also my groundfighting suck because haven't done it really, that's why I try to focus not ever ending up there. Lately I started doing more plyometrics, especially jumping and I should also start doing sprints... I think these are one of the most important parts of leg strength because they build explosiveness which are everything in strong kicks. You also cannot jump kick well if your jump strength is sucky.

What do you think should be in MA training for a complete martial artist? What are your best aspects, and what are the worst Smiley ?

to master what you listed here you need a whole life. And if you consider that there is family, social life and kids then maybe you need more Smiley.

one important think is to master the "balance". It's important in martial arts and in life as well  Grin

yup, but some of us dont have such a social life lol. Like im not very social, well i am but i dont go out every night, i dont go out at all lol. Maybe because none of my closest friends go out either. So instead i train.

I agree with everything there.

but i feel that with enough technique and sparring most of it is covered as you learn it through trial and error in sparring. But yeah, stamina, technique and sparring imo are the most important. Im probably wrong though lol.

    Know your art/sport.

Train your mind and body accordingly.

Enjoy and pass it on to others.

No need to overcomplicate it, in my opinion Tongue.

Not only practice the art, practice the philosophy aswell. In my opinion the training is just one aspect of what it means to be a martial artist, if you just follow the training aspect..You are a practicioner. If you call yourself a martial artist, you have to do more than that.

A grandmaster spoke to us blackbelts, I remember what he said even many years later(he had a sense of humor and he had us all laughing all the time): "Study to be wise, train to be strong, Respect those who deserve it and always be dilligent...but never forget to have fun aswell. Fight when you must..That is also fun, but dont tell anyone I told you so Smiley"
Up to the last bit he was dead serious, when he talked about fighting he just had a huge smile Cheesy

    Also Smiley
"It is better to conquer yourself than to win a thousand battles. Then the victory is yours. It cannot be taken from you, not by angels or by demons, heaven or hell."

The knowledge part is maybe the most important here. Where the mind goes, body follows.

But too often I see people only focusing on their art's training methods dropping everything else out. Being like water applies to here as well. I believe crossfit style approach of fitness is pretty close how a martial artist should be. Be good in everything, power, strength, endurance, agility, explosiveness, speed...

I really want to start doing fast sprints, in the end running away is the best self-defense anyways  Cool. I also really should start sparring, I'll ask my MA friend if he wants to start. We don't have any equipment but who needs them lol.

If you don't have gear than just hit lightly or do no contact sparring or if you have the testicular fortitude fight to the death.

Although Magnus already gave a hint at this and i would like to believe that everyone here already agrees on it i think it has to be made very clear (redundant as it may be): Learn to be a nice person, learn to be patient, control your anger and your fear.  Do this (at least start the process of learning) before you learn how to punch/kick someone to death. A bully is annoying - a bully with superior fighting skill (or a weapon) is a threat to his social sphere. I have seen so many kids who had fighting skills far superior to any other recognizable part of their personality over the years. I saw them when i was a kid - those other kids who spin-kicked you in the groin for a cigarette. I guess everyone living in a big city knows what i'm talking about. And now i see them in court - sad stories mostly.

So if ones education lacks on the social side he's better off not to learn how to cripple his opponent using ancient asian techniques.

Well well I train to be able to beat everyone up, be more powerful than anyone else. But I also train to have patience and calm mind not to do that.
