I've been thinking about flashlights as a tool for self-defense for quite some time now. Even though I am quite confident of my ability to defend myself, I'd still use any dirty tricks and use anything I get my hands on. Also there is a huge chance that the attacker might have some kind of a weapon. My country is very safe and getting mugged is really surprising. I've been thinking going abroad for a longer trip though and everything which helps in self-defense is appreciated. I found this article on flashlights for self-defense: http://www.hertao.com/selfdefense/flashlight . I think they are great because they work both as a blinding tool but also as a weapon, and I've got quite some training with short sticks, pens and other stuff. The article says that 200 lumen lights are pretty decent against single opponents blinding them for short period of time allowing you to either escape or fight back with the highest chance to prevail. But if you really want to spent on it, there are lights which are over 1000 lumen like this http://www.oveready.com/custom-flashlights/triple-xpg-super-scout/prod_244.html , lights such as this can blind whole groups of people for minutes having a chance to cause eye-damage at nights. Use this kind of light and you will have more than enough time to flee or kick your attacker's ass for good. Why flashlights, not peppers-sprays or anything else instead? Well, at least in my country we have very strict laws about carrying any types of weapons, only officers and some other professionals on duty are allowed to use and carry peppers-sprays or anything else similar. And carrying real weapons abroad where you aren't perfectly familiar with the law is just stupid and can lead to problems with the local officers.

not peppers-sprays because it's not allowed everywhere. A flashlight you can cary with you any time as umbrella, as well.

yeah i have a steel/ aluminium alloy flashlight, 100k candles, very bright, and it has a decent length, very durable. and hey you can spin it around by its strap like a nunchaku. start of this vid:
same thing just smack'em with the flashlight instead of the nightstick and knee to the jaw.. best thing people won't expect it. and hey mine has a flash function and an adjustable focus, it can quite easily blind you! as i've blinded a friend for long enough for me to get behind his back, that would equal one hit to the stomach and one cracked skull before hes even able to see.

Here in Norway weapons on security officers is illegal..But..thats why they buy the large maglights. In case they need it, they have some backup with that. Some cary the special 6 cell version, but even the regular 6 cell is vicious if needed. Get a small surefire/maglight, and it can function as a makeshift yawara(local krav maga club train with it). As for blinding them, well, seen people test that and its not always as effective as promised(have to pull it out, direct it. Is it dark enough for it to function properly. Do the assailant react to it etc). I am from a military family, and have been part of a lot of fun tests with various...impliments However, seen surefire flashlight in action and its nasty. Basically flash them in the face with 950 lumen, before you immediately counterattack with, well, a spiked flashlight

Magnus, my friend is a taxi driver and he also has a huge maglight next to his seat - because is the most viable allowed weapon for self-defense there.
I think that just carrying a rock solid flashlight alone is a huge advantage in a fight but that you can also blind your opponents? Not bad...
It's pitch black here in Nordic countries at this time of a year... even though streetlights reduce the effect the ~1000 lumen flashlights would seriously cripple the opponent for a long period of time.

I know that, from Norway myself Raton According to studies I read awhile back regarding them, a quick flash with a flashlight like that, is more effective than a prolonged beam(brain reaction). Have to get one and test that, you got me interested in how someone would react to that

i tested it cause my flashlight has a flash function.. not just on my friend, on my dad, my sister ( she didn't agree to it but i did it anyway) and had my friend try it on me as well as my dad several times throughout the day.. pissed me the hell off. i fell over this one time just from the flash.

Good idea, but I'd not sure how accessible it would be. Like if it's in a backpack, you can't be like, "Can I have a minute to get my flashlight? Thanks."
Tough to carry in your pockets as well.

Another option for something in addition to a flashlight, if it's legal, is a kubotan. Apparently they're really effective at tearing into muscle, even the ones that look flat! And they look so innocent!
