I just joined a new style of martial arts, and well...my biggest problem is flexibility. I am not the most flexible fella around. How can I become more flexible?

    do flexibility exercises. Tongue

in particular, what kind of flexibility is required from you? ex. high kicks, etc. etc.

i ask because may be we can tailor fit a stretching routine for you.

Stretch 6 days a week without fail. Do every single stretch you can think of and hold each one for 30 seconds to 1 minute or longer if you want. The stretching should not be particularly painful because over stretching can cause injury. Ease into each stretch slowly. When it comes to stretching and martial arts its the opposite of lifting waits. In order not to get injured you have to stretch before you work out.

Aaah sorry. Well we are definitely doing high kicks. But also things like twisting and turning. I'd say a "general flexibily packet". Thanks for the link, Merc. +Rep!

I feel that dynamic streches have helped me so much. For highkicks do dynamic stretches as the first link mercnill posted. I have gone from being only able to kick the hip area, to hitting the chest area within a month or two! Its amazing, i love dynamic stretches.

I second this. When I use to do muay thai I noticed dynamic stretching really helped open up my hips.

Can you tell us more about the martial art as well, that might help.  Well, not that I can help specifically, I never did a martial art for more than ten minutes without wanting to kick the instructor up the backside.
