MMA. Its kickboxing and grappling, most likely Brazillian Jiujitsu. Kickboxing grounded in Karate I think, as I saw a Ushiro Uraken being used, and perform a chambered kick as opposed to the "throwing" motion in MT. And MMA is not a martial art, its a sport, but most styles used in it are martial arts

basically any striking martial art (shotokan, kickboxing, kyokushin, muay thai, "the right" taekwondo, ...) combined with a grappling art (wrestling, judo, brazilian jiujitsu, sambo, ...) will make you a good fighter. You can study each apart to a very good level, which will take a lot of years of dedication, or you can just join a MMA gym and you will have "all in one" in a short time, but you will not develop/know each small detail of a punch, of a kick, ... as learning each art individually, but will be for sure a faster learning process. It's up to you what you prefer. Anyway, keep in mind that what you saw in "never back down" are professional fighters with many years of experience which train maybe 6-8 hours per day. Also consider that it's just a movie, every move should look nice on TV . Cheers!

I practice ninjutsu right now, and I have done capoeira in the past (as well as some karate, taekwondo, etc). The two are drastically different and what I can say about them both is this. Capoeira is extremely flashy, and looks very very cool... up until the point that you get you ass handed to you. Practically for self defense capoeira is not terribly good. It is better than nothing, but there are more realistic alternatives. Then there's ninjutsu (ninja training). This is fun as hell to practice, and realistically the "best" martial art I have practiced. I say best only because in a real life fight, I find that ninjutsu had the best strikes, grapples, and the best escape techniques. It is not very flashy at all. But would you rather be the "flashy" guy on the ground, or the calm guy that just won?

He asked for the style used in the movie guys, and its clearly mma is it really? Anyways i wouldnt mind doing mma, i mean they spar allot right? Anyways i always thought it was some sort of martial arts, like proper martial arts. Like movies such as bruce lee and jackie chan, magnificent butcher, ip man, etc... all use proper coreographed martial arts.

You shouldn't jump from one art to another, because you should at least master the basics. The basics are important, because you'll be using it as you progress in anything. But jumping from one art to another will confuse you as to applying what you've learned. Hehe

No, mma is not a martial art, rather its a sport where people with a mixed background in martial arts compete, hence the name mixed martial arts Focus on TSD now, if you later on decide to try mma, having some basics to build on will be very beneficial. I can do several styles at once, simply because I have been doing MA for years, and am able to separate them, also the fact that I try to do arts that focus on a different style than the other(except judo+aikido, but those flow together perfectly for obvious reasons). Helps that very often you will find similarities between all the arts.

It's good to try out different martial arts but it is also vital that you also focus heavily on one or even two. I am now heavily focused on bujinkan but also train now capoeira to achieve ultimate body control(you spend most of the time upside down in capoeira). Capoeira is btw pretty interesting art because it is NEVER allowed the back, stomach or legs to touch the ground and if you are about to, you have to prevent that with any means necessary. Try to knock over a capoeira dancer...
Martial artists should train versatilely. I think training should involve everything you have an opportunity for. Acrobatics/gymnastics, bag training, stand/ground fighting, locks, throws selfdefense stuff etc. In my opinion why example locks, throws etc are very vital for training is that you don't just learn how to lock & throw people, you learn how to control yourself and your opponents. Learn how to move, how to handle your and your opponent's balance etc. During my training I have noticed that I've become almost immovable and sturdy compared to many other martial artists who haven't had similar training, I think I could control a karateka very easily to ground. I would have no chance in stand sparring though because my kicks/punches aren't developed that well yet.
That's why I have to train my punches like there is no tomorrow until I can do sonic punches!
