Tried skating for the first time yesterday. It's awesome! Not hard at all to get started.

I was in Be'er Sheva and went to a few sporting goods stores. They sell a few models. I met a guy who told me about a weekly rollerblade hockey game not far from where I live played by guys in their 30s and 40s. He let me ride around in the store.

I had been reluctant to do this because of the fear I'd want to buy a pair here. To give you an idea of why it's worthwhile to wait until October, the K2 Mach 90 sells for $188 at inline warehouse. In Be'er Sheva, they were NIS 1899 ($542.57) !!!  Shocked Shocked Shocked

I then went to another store where I was the only customer. They let me ride around for 20 minutes. I found I could stop well by pointing my toes inward but the T-stop was rather abrupt. My questions regarding lessons were all answered by the response -- "in Tel Aviv." Well, I'm far from there.

Maybe I'll also pick up an inexpensive pair of used hockey blades if I decide to join the weekly game. I just really don't want to get injured; on the other hand, I love love love hockey!

Trying to get the hang of stopping. Been checking out a lot of videos.

When I do a T stop, I do it much too abruptly. Can't seem to control the amount of friction I supply.

Been working on the turn-around stop too. I like this one better; however, I can only turn it into a quick turn with a 50% speed drop. Very hard to do a 180. Of course, I ain't 15 years old.

Any suggestions or recommended videos on stopping?

The Break Stop works for most.

I removed my Brake to better enable Backwards Skating when doing Cross Overs.

The Power Stop is the one I had to learn to pass the ISSA exam.

    Power stop (slide)

Also a Snow Plow like movement is also good at controlling speed.

Yeah, I kinda forgot about the brake stop. Smiley

That Power Slide video is what I've been working on, what I had called a turn-around stop. I'm afraid I'm going to end up a tangled mess on the ground.

I've pretty much just stuck to skating on an outdoor basketball court. I ventured out once. The streets here must be a lot rougher than I had thought. Extreme vibration.
Controlling speed, even with the snow plow, is really tough for me. I've got my work cut out.

Eric Heiden is the only athlete in the history of speed skating to have won all five events in a single Olympic's and the only one to have won a gold medal (5) in all events. Over the course of Heiden's career he skated 15 world records:
