Sounds good to me: you're combining rezistance training with weight training. But i agree with merc , you should ask your coach for some tips first.

if i were you i would do more squats and deadlifts. your quite lucky you can go rugby Smiley do well my friend, do your squats and deadlifts, dont do any isolations as thats not going to help you in rugby, afterall you use your whole body in rugby right? So thats what you want to do when you train for it.

Agree with Hamid^. Squat, deadlifts and press. Isolations wont do much in the way of making you stronger for rugby.

I disagree with the squatting and deads, depending on the code, I played league and union, IMO those exercises may slow you down, fast sprints and strong upper torso is part of the game, in league the scrums are a joke and does not involve power. The coach generally includes leg work, mine was piggyback another player up steps, pushing a large object, some recent guys I see do walking lunges with weight held above their heads. But things surely have changed since I played. Most kids here start playig 7~8yo and quite big at 13.
OP if I read right you include lat pulls behind neck? be sure to use lighter weight with these, pull slow and steady only to ear level and never tilt head forward, I would do shrugs to help shoulder tackles..m 02

I have to disaggree with you Ozmuz, squats&deads will not necessarily slow you down, like everything else it depends on how you incorporate it Smiley Admittedly, I am not a rugny player, but I lived in England for 3 motnhs, and saw how they guys trained. Not traditional squats, but a teammate on shoulders, then squatting(wich I am sure they took from martial arts Wink. Look at Marit Bjørgen(Such a fan of that woman, best female CC skier ever), 170kg squats. She is not exactly slow ;)She semi competes in running outside the season as an example.

Also, know several rugby players do squats,Lomu being the one I have heard the most about.

I do aggree with your mention of lat pulls behind your neck, those can severly mess up your shoulders(I know..)so if you have to do them, be really careful..

Posibly an over reaction as most here push flat out SL & SS, I think thats a bit much for 13yo rugby player, still maybe the OP can let us know what the coach has him doing?

Magnus, so what type of squats do the martial arts codes do as speed is important, would they be doing jump squats ? just wondering.

Magnus, so what type of squats do the martial arts codes do as speed is important, would they be doing jump squats ? just wondering.
Various types, often done with a partner. Jumping squats like you mentioned, generally traditionally there are a very wide spectre of squeat variations(can find some if you are interested)

Max power is not so important, getting power with endurance is key, and explosive power is speed Smiley. Judo for instance uses alot of squat variations, where squats get mixed in with other exercises.
Found this vid, a workout very similar to what we do in my dojo, shows a very traditional training style squat(but simplified due to circuit training. want to jump to it,its 3:29)
    JUDO Anaerobic Fitness Circuit
