I started Taekwondo in Philippines when i was 5 till 7 in WTF. I was yellow belt before i left.

I immigrated to Canada when i was 7 and started Taekwondo at 8 as ITF, till now 14 years old. Now im blue belt ive started questioning my self about the difference between WTF and ITF.

Well first of all wtf uses more kicks less punches, dodge kicks instead of blocking them and they also use a chest guard while itf focus both kicks and punch anywhere in the body not below the belt, less contact power, blocks more often than dodging.

I havent found yet my answer if i will continue as ITF or move to WTF . Right now im thinking about getting to black belt in ITF and move on to WTF hopefully wont have to start from white belt. I focus mostly sparring and i want to get it more competitive.

Out of all my ITF sparring ive only lost 2 matches, and the rest was all wins till now. Im pretty good at sparring, but not the best im sure. Im practicing my hope as initial kicks are 360. My most progressed kick is back kick|jumping back kick. Also the reason how i got 2 lost is first i was just white belt back then i vsed a pretty taller guy than me when i was 10 or 11, havent had much of sparring experience yet in ITF.

The other one is when i was fighting the announcer said "STOP" so i stopped and lost my focus but she wasnt actually talking to me and got me a roundhouse kick to my face and thats how i lost. I couldnt catch up.

I really plan on taking competitive sparring more in the future. So help me out if i should stay in ITF blackbelt and progress to DAN? or move on to WTF competitive sparring get me some pointers to help me out please ty!

They are practically the same to be perfectly honest, just...the war between the two feds that keeps them apart. If you want sparring it doesnt matter wich one you choose, but wtf will ofc allow you to go further with competitions etc.

In my opinion, the only reason to chose wtf, is IF you can find a real traditional school. The watered down pure sports tkd is missing everything except the tournament aspect.

So, they are similar, but ITF vs WTF traditional= same level.  ITF vs WTF sports style=ITF.

Your problem is not what federation but your sparring, you need to go and sit in on some sparring from another school or even a different art. Since you are taking TKD I would suggest that you sit in on a Tang Soo Do sparring session or a Mu Duk Kwan even a Karate or Judo and see how they move and spar. As my master told me, the different between a white belt and a black belt during sparring is the white looks at the different art and critiques the fighter's technique, the black belt looks and asks how I can add that to my training. But hey that is just me.

You probably wont find alot of clubs of TKD or TSD that do ALOT of sparring and competitions. Most are based on Katas and traditional stuff, which isnt bad if thats what you want, but it doesnt seem like you want that.

for that reason i would say look for a TKD club, ask them, if they dont have much sparring and competitions then dont bother, your just wasting your time.

If i were you i would look for something like a kickboxing club, muay thai club, boxing club, kyokushin karate also has alot of nice sparring. Those all usually have alot of competitions, especially boxing.

also im not saying you are but dont fall for the trap i fell into when i started thinking boxing and kickboxing were rubbish beacuse they were sports. They could probably own me even though i did a TMA because they do a hell lot more sparring while i was stuck with Katas... which do not help much with sparring.

What belt are you at the moment for Taekwondo?

Uhm Hamid, TKD has a massive amount of sparring, especially WTF Smiley Yes, there are poomsae, but thats not a bad thing. In my opinion, practicing a art as a sport is fine, as long as you dont forget your roots(wich is happening more and more in wtf...).

Oh ok i just got it in my head now that because i did TSD and i got very little sparring and alot of katas, i heard TKD is extremely simlar.

    But im wrong then Smiley

And i admit i am a bit biased about the Katas. I hate them... i know i shouldn't but i hate them so much. I did them so much because i thought it would help in sparring, and also i thought that if i did the katas, my reward would be sparring but instead i just got more katas.

And even though i asked him as nice as i could the teacher would never let us spar and just made us do katas all the time... and i just ended up hating them so much.

I know if i was in a club that had a good mix of both i would have liked my katas...

Which is another reason why im so happy about joining the judo club. NO KATAS Cheesy

i know i know but my club doesnt, its all competition based!!! Wink so yeah... Tongue Take that! hate katas...

But muay thai is an exception. They have brillain awesome full contact sparring. Their warriors are some of the best around. And they dont just do dances all day, they also condition, they spar a lot! Muay thai fighters are pretty amazing, just like boxers, just like judokas.
