Firstly be warned.
Tonight I was running late for my football match... I got there rushed through my standard streches and got on to have a couple of shots - I felt bit tight but thought I'll ease myself in... I normally have an idea when something is going to go as it tweaks beforehand...
Anyway it's pretty cold tonight and within 10 min I had to suddenly sprint and change direction and ping... my calf has gone proper bad, it felt like the muscle wound up really tight into a knot, a def ping not a tear... dropped me to the floor straight away!
It's not where a calf normally goes (in the middle) it's right at the top of the calf... feels like where the muscle joins the bone.
I would say it's a strong grade 2 or a mild grade 3 pull... Problem is I had to hang around in the cold for another hour or so after without being able to cover it up!!
Questions:
Will Whey powder help? in the fact the muscle will rebuild better?
I don't have a compression bandage the right size it's too big... shall I put it on and tape it up?
Should I tape it up over night?
Is it def the calf or could it be the tendon behind the knee?? The middle of the calf is sore to touch.

How do you know it's a tear and not cramps?

because cramps normally last for minutes or sec and can be stretched out...
This happened 3 hours ago and I'm still struggling to walk.

No coaches there.. its mens football.
spoke to the manager (subbed off) and just recomended RICE and gentle massage with some anti inflams...
No doctor unless I go to A&E (it's not that serious) and it will be just full of drunks and take hours to be seen!!
If it still hurts bad tomorrow after work I'll go down.

The way I understood it, it could be a partial tear of the muscle or of the tendon at the proximal end.
You really should go to get that checked by an specialist.

That sucks... I have absolutely no time tomorrow...
If its no better by Friday I'll go and see the sports physio.
It's so high on the calf I have a really bad feeling it may be the tendon..
unless I pulled the Plantaris??
Hopefully it will just be a few weeks/rest of the year out and ot surgery!!

What you're describing sounds like a tear of the gastrocnemius muscle. This muscle starts on the end of the femur (thigh bone just above the knee) and attaches on the calcaneus (heel). You need to see an orthopaedic surgeon, if available. Most family practice doctors or general physicians will probably not diagnose it correctly (the diagnosis can be made based on your description of the event [history] and the physical exam - WITHOUT MRI).
Treatment of a gastroc tear is rest. Period. Wrapping the calf in an ACE bandage may help it feel better. Muscle tears take 6 weeks to heal, and you run the risk of lengthening the healing process if you "use" the muscle when it still hurts - even a little. Sorry, Friend, but you're going to working your upper body ONLY for awhile.
Other things this could be: plantaris muscle tear, achilles tendon rupture, soleus muscle tear. Unlikely to be a bone injury, but if you came to see me I would get an Xray just to be sure the bones were normal.

Hi Doc, Thanks for your input... it's really great to have such a quick and knowledgeable response I'm pretty sure its not bones as there was no contact/impact at the time... The reason I am leaning towards the Plantaris is it did feel like a 'small' muscle going, not a big one.. I've had my fair share of muscle pulls etc over the years and this didn't feel like a a big muscle going and even though I didn't describe it as follows it could have being described as if I had been hit by an object (after reading other papers etc)... in fact as soon as it happened I grabbed my leg... I mean I doubt I'll get to see an orthopaedic surgeon, knowing the UK NHS I'll be lucky to get a nurse. (Thats no way meant to be disrespectful as I understand and appreciate the fantastic work our underpaid and over worked medical staff do!!) They'll just tell me to rest it! So whats the worst?? The injury is in my left leg... I can walk as long as my left leg stays infront of my right... steps are ok at the min... Think I'm going to dose up on pain killers (ibuprofen) get a correct sized compression bandage and some crutches and prob not play for the remained of the year

Good call on the Ibuprofen. Crutches are good, too. Don't be alarmed when the calf swells...
Good luck. I'd be interested to hear how it all works out.

So quick update.
First few days it was gradually getting better... to the point I could walk slowly with a heavy limp.
Then I contacted a friend of mine whose mother pratices acupuncture... well what the hell I thought I'll have a session.
Monday night was the first session and I've never had it before... Didn't hurt when she put the needles in at all. Then she hooked it up to a small electical voltage and left it on for about 30min to stimulate the muscle, at the same time she put a heat lamp on it. After she finished she gave me a deep tissue massage (that hurt like hell).
Next couple of days really felt a difference, got a couple of cramps but was moving much easier!
Went back tonight and had a milder treatment but again she really went to work on the massage... now I'm pretty much back to walking fine... I'm still a bit wary and obviously no chance of jogging/running yet.
Went to watch my soccer team play last night and was so painful to watch they where on fire and just wanted to get out there and play!!
Anyway not sure if I really bought into the whole acupunture thing, but I'm really sold now!
Got a big game on 10th Dec and reckon I maybe able to get back involved... we'll have to see but am hoping to do a light jog next week.

RICE!
Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation.
Ibuprofen is great addition as an Anti-Inflammatory Pain Reliever.
After a few days you can start Hot - Cold Therapy. Submerging your leg in Very Warm Water for 10-20 minutes and then Ice for 10 minutes Repeat for an Hour+
