Hey, is this a good idea.
Trying to build up my punches, i have a phone book, its decent enough, i get my sister to hold it, i punch it lightly, she doesnt like it when i punch it hard so im just going to use it for distancing and light punches, mainly for speed, although that does result in more power. Is it a good idea? Or bad?

Find a better way than getting your sister to hold it.

Spike it to a wall or a telephone pole or something. Holding someone's punching target is only fun for so long.

Can you figure a way to hang it from a pull up bar?

Lol, wtf, are we really having a conversation about the best thing to hang a phone book off so you can punch it repeatedly.....isn't that a little punching bag you can get for this purpose?

To be honest, I don't see the point. In my opinion you'd get better results if you hang a piece of cardboard from the ceiling and punch that. Concentrate on form and breathing and try to finish your punch one inch behind the cardboard. Don't "overpunch".
Get the cardboard to hit the ceiling, try to land a solid punch when it's coming back down. This will increase your speed and coordination and should have a higher effect on your punching power than hitting a phonebook. If you want to toughen up, do knuckle push-ups and bounce yourself a little off the ground with every rep. Be sure to keep your wrist in a straight line from your lower arms though to avoid injury and don't do those when you are tired.
take care Oliver

Yeah I got some rope and a drill. I'll use that. I'll make a cardboard one and a Argo one. Every week ill go into Argo and pick up a free catalogue or two. I will then crate a whole bag lol. Yeah I would by a bag but I'm not rich and I like to improvise and get away with spending least money possible

Oh yeah, just thought of one more thing. When I started punching "drills" (I did them mostly for endurance training), I forgot to keep my feet busy (ironic, endurance, duh ) and actually had lost a bit of overall mobility the next time I stepped into the ring. Keep moving in and out and sideways, you wouldn't stand still in the ring while sparring, don't do it while training your skills either. take care Oliver

At our dojo we use telephone books whenever we need to strike with full force. I say it is a good tool to use for that purpose. A sandbag like SirCroc suggested might be a little too hard if you aren't used to striking like I am. I'm sure most of you are much more accustomed than yours truly which renders my last two sentences useless.

Hey, it seems like your looking for an innocuous way to hit your sister! Kidding. My brother and I beat each other so much my dad hung a punching bag up in my bedroom when I was young in an attempt to get me to stop fighting. That just made the beatings worse on my brothers part Why not just get a bag?

Take phone book, get ductape. Find a tree, mast, roof beam inside etc and tape it on. I like to be inventive aswell, recently bought 25 balls of expired hay that could no longer be used for animal food. Great striking targets(hard as heck, but still soft), when they are beaten down, I used them as archery targets. So, tons of options if you are inventive. Look around, and I am sure you will come up with something you can do to create a decent striking target.
