Hello men and women, I am just curious if there is any fun martial arts that I can teach myself as I don't have the time to go to classes cause my schedule at work is random every week. Basicly I want to buy some books and start teaching myself some simple fighting/self defence techniques at home when I have time. So my question is what would be a good martial arts to teach myself and with your suggestion if you could link some good books to help too.

Tai chi - self learn for health.

For self-defense, you must join a martial arts gym.

Having trained for 10 years myself, you should definitely find a local dojo or martial arts gym to train with.  It's worth it.  Grin

find a dojo and some time to train there. If you have time to train at home I am sure you can manage somehow to go to a dojo. 10 hours with a GOOD trainer will be more useful than 3 months without. That's just my opinion.

but of course depends at which level you want to practice/learn it. If you want just to punch/kick something then a punching bag at home is enough, but if you want to learn the "correct" way of punching/kicking/striking is not enough. First decide what you want and I am sure that you will have also the answer.

I agree. I've practiced karate for a long time and i will recomend you to define what do you want. Even if you just want to learn a few technics of self defense you should go to a couple of self-defense clases with a instructor ( preferible a experienced martial artist  Grin)

Find a dojo, you wont be able to learn alot online. You will end up learning bad form. Best find a dojo or gym where there is a good coach to help teach you well. You can use videos to supplement yourself.

Taichi or slow tiachi as is what you learn on youtube is more of a relaxation technique and wont help with self defence.

There used to be a really good guy on youtube by the name of ChosonNinja or something like that.  He was GREAT.  I think the haters and just all the negativity he got finally caught up to him though.  He took down his account but some of his youtube videos are still up.  It is possible to learn on your own or even create your own (study the anatomy and the weak points and then study various martial arts and put it together).  This being said your own martial art will probably not be as good as one that has been developed over thousands of years.  I really suggest you try to find a school that can teach you how to defend yourself.

Yeah, I remember him, had alot of very good vids. Sad really, he was actually a very modest guy, and I seem to remember him apologizing for annoying people before he vanished... Undecided

Also, no, you cant learn a art on your own. Some techniques maybe, but thats it...if you actually get the form right that is. Can promie you one thing; if you try to learn a technique at home and its added to mucle memory wrong...its going to be hard to learn it properly if you start at a proper school.

As for tai chi...if you speed it up, it turns into something different Wink Here its what many art calls drill sparring(some do freefights aswell).
