Hey guys , Last year i started playing ping pong /table tennis with my friends (in pubs , at my friend's home ) . I am wondering if any of you enjoy playing ping pong ... i am just a beginner but i hope i will improve my technique soon. I created this thread and we can talk about it (just like cycling and swimming thread ) Anyone enjoys playing ping pong?

It sure is a lot of fun, I played a lot in school when everyone had access to tables in the common room. And what I love about it is that you can get pretty darn good at it without any special coaching or advice. Of course, those things will help you, but you can get really good at curving, smashing, serving and all of the other techniques by simply playing and having fun.

i actually played alot of competitive ping pong when i was 13-16 in an older mens league. make sure you master top spin shots, secondly backspin, and dont use the easily beaten side spin shot

Yeah I played a lot from when I was 7... My dad was a coach, I gave up about 17...then restarted at about 25, haven't played for past couple of years due to work... It's prob the sport I'm best at but I keep playing football (soccer) whilst I am just about young enough. Once you get away from ping pong and start playing table tennis it is pretty good cardio and very hard work... I love the mordern defender style... you get some awesome rallies... (although really I'm a 3rd ball attacker) Little vid for you to enjoy

i remember when i was young, i would play my dad all the time
he would always beat me
the first time i beat him, i will always remember this, he goes, "ok, now you get my strong hand" and he put the paddle in the other hand
took a while to beat him again

Hahahaha awesome!!!!!! I love how fast ping pong is. When you have been playing for a while theres a moment when you get so focus that you dont realize how fast you are moving and reacting. Great sport men

I used to compete in the inter-school table tennis league back in those days.
Used to love it and paid some serious money for table tennis bats at the time. You really do get what you pay for ( the better bats are lighter and have advanced surfaces glued over sponge backings).
A few years ago my interest got rekindled when I was on holiday in Majorca. There was a full size professional table next to the pool and my exercise was this and swimming for 2 weeks. The skill came back fast.
Now we have a full size table tennis table both outside the building and inside at the back of the restaurant at work. Great fun and helps relieve stress when you have a bad day.
Concentrate on spins, serves and speed and the rest will follow.

I used to play it in high school. Even though I didn't practice it much, I was okay. People said they found my style weird because I was left handed, but I doubt it makes difference, they just had excuses

nah Ping pong is where you stand up right and pat the ball back and forth... table tennis is where you bend your knees play competitive and with effort... Speak to anyone who plays table tennis seriously and if you call it ping pong they will take offense... @ the guy who talks about serve a straight backspin serve is more than enough. It should clear the net by no more than 1.5 inches and if left it should bounce twice on the other side of the table... this makes it impossible for the other player to attack it... once you get better you can start to disguise your service adding side spin, mixing in float and even some topspin. If the other player plays a return that doesn't bounce twice on your side you should be able to attack with a heavy topspin loop, putting the other player under big pressure. regarding bats... I would recomend getting a chinese bat from ebay ... they have massive amounts of spin potential... you can rest the ball on the table then put the bat on the ball, push down a little then pick the ball up on the bottom of the bat... they are that sticky!!!! you can put a coin on the rubber and you won't beable to remove it... crazy!! esp for the price!! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/999-A-Pips-In-Long-Pip-out-Table-Tennis-Racket-/250955593518?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a6e1e772eYou can get some better rubbers (japan/euro made) but you can get more than enough from the chinese to be going with... the only problem is the sponge is a little hard but hey!!!
