Hi everyone!
I would like some opinions from either Tae kwon do practician, or someone with overall martial arts experience.
I used to practise tae kwon do when I was younger. It was about 5 years ago since i quit. I was a blue belt with red stripe (3 cup) and really enjoyed it, but I quit, and now I thought about martial arts training, and thought about going back to the class.
What I would like to know is this. Will it be possible to practice with the others in the "advanced" class as I did before, even though I had a break of 5 years, and forgot most of the techniques. Another thing I would like you to share if you can is, how long do you think it will take to reach the same level I was when I gave it up? Back then we trained twice a week, and I am now willing to do a lot at home in order to get back to the level I was on.
Thanks in advance!

I did TKD for 12 years, 2 dan. Well, you either start from scratch, or you freshen up on your abilities on your own. At the level you were, alot of the techniques will be ingrained in your body(muscle memory 4tw)and you should get the hang of it again pretty quick. Go through the pomsee´s you learned. Think sa-jang is the one you got to(or was it o-jang?dont remember )Pomsee´s contain alot of techniques you should know,so a good way to freshen up on them. How long it will take is hard to say, but you will not strat from scratch, your body will "remember" alot of what you learned back then, so suspect it all comes down to how much effort you put in it Good luck

Thanks, that sounds great!
And yeah, I think it will come back to me pretty quick. Today after my weight workout, I stood infront of the mirror and did a punch from (I do not remember the stance), and it felt like it was only yesterday I was there. But one thing I know is very, very crappy is my flexibility. I am not very stretchy no more, but I think that is one of the things which is easy to solve.
I am now sure I want to start again. I am going to call my old trainer and see what they think and if they remember me. It is so fascinating to go back, where I spent about 3hrs a week for 4.5-5 years.

Dynamic & static stretching.Warm up, start with dynamic, then finish with static. Or did you mean actual stretches? Thanks, that sounds great!

If you are not sure you want to start tkd again...How about trying another martial art? After 12 years of tkd, I wanted to try something new, and have tried several since then. And your background will be a plus for learning something new. Yeah, flexibility is not that hard to train, unless like me you have a naturally stiff body, who refuses to do sidesplit. Could do frontsplit though. You know that when a grandmaster gives up making you more flexible, you have pretty much reached the limit

Yes I have been thinking about trying out something new, but here's the thing. I'm from Skövde, if you heard of it, a rather small town, about 35-40k inhabitants, and there are only one more club in town which is karate I think. Since you are familiar with tkd, you must have heard of Viking cup, which was in Skövde this year. Our club is one of the very best in Sweden, and our trainer is the national team trainer, which means the quality in our club is probably many times better then all the other in the whole country And also, the people there are very nice. But since I probably am going to study in Gothenburg or Stockholm next year, I have no reason to continue with tkd instead of some other type of martial arts. Ninjutsu is the one I would like to practise the most.

I usually point people to this page and this page for stretching advice for high kicks and martial arts. Not bad, though watch the hips and drop it ike a rock if you get any persistent joint pain.
