ok before people reply to this thread please answer these two questions if both = no please don't reply unless you think you have something extra you could put in the topic

1)have you competed in a triathlon yourself or a long endurance event yourself (more then 1 1/2 hours)?

2)Do you know my background and determination to succeed?

ok abit of background reminder

in the past year i have completed a 5km swimathon in april completing it in 1 hour 44 minutes, a triathlon end of september and recently did a 20km running event with another one in just over a week.

my main goal for the triathlons next year is to get in sub 2.30 time, my biggest weakest going into this year triathlon was my running which since the event i have started to improve on.

at the end of april i will be redoing the swimathon and trying to break the 1 hour 30 minute mark, so between january and april focus on cardio will be mainly swimming except biking to work and maybe a few sunday running events (to keep running ok)

now for the triathlon part my half plan (outside the training we did last year) is to some triathlons on route the big one next year (virgin london triathlon) which is september 22nd i believe. the other one i'm thinking of doing are on the following dates:

june 17th
july 1st
september 9th

now will this be to much for building upto the big one or keep this be the basis of the perfect plan to get to sub 2.30 time?

You forgot to mention the distance. Olympic I guess Smiley.

But anyhow.

june 17th and july 1st is to close together. And I just went to the virgin london triathlon site and it says that competition day is either 22nd or 23rd of september.

So forget about the September triathlon. So I would pick the june one Wink. Too much competitions are too hard in long endurance races. Because in a race you will always be beyond your training limits and be exhausted afterwards. Even if you try to hold yourself back. Thats at least my experience. And after that "test" event you will need at some recovery time where you cant do your usual training. And after that June event you could still work on what you want to work on with some time left. Thats why you should pick the june event (and nothing else) in my point of view.

You could handle it, if you are close to pro levels, but then you wouldnt ask such questions Cheesy

I've been thinking about doing an olympic triathlon next Summer. Bicycling and running are my best parts because I cycle like 100km/week and I don't think 10km running is too much for me because have ran it many times before.

I'll start training my training in next 2 months when I really stop my bicycling season. My worst part is really swimming. I am not a bad swimmer but not even close good enough to swim 1500m freestyle or anything. Winters in Finland are very cold so I think I spent ALL of my triathlon training time in swimming for the next 4-5 months and after that I will be doing mix of bicycling, running and swimming every week.

Haven't done anything like this before so I'm very enthusiastic participating in a real triathlon Smiley

msifuw - yeh it is olympic distance again and my previous training plan can be found at http://www.askscooby.com/team-and-individual-sports/london-triathlon-training-help-needed/ (just don't bump it up)

about my level i would say i'm a good amateur condition no way i am a pro because i have only done the one triathlon but conditioning is to good from other events.

about to do with my recovery time it's really high after last one i only had a slight sore knee and hip the next day it was fine for me to walk around town all do shopping, and even after my 20km race where furthers i ran before the event was about 12-13km it only took me 2 days to recover. so i could easily do some light swimming the day after or upper body weight session or something similar.

@raton check the link i gave msifuw above and other questions let me know about it.

Yeh light cardio work would be possible. But as far as I understood you will do triathlons as "test" runs - so there are all 3 disciplines. Its not like a running race and then you go for a swim the next day... You have all in one. And you need to recover from all...

And its also a matter on how hard you push. My usual race preparations include interval training and endurance speed work - meaning close to race pace at close to race distance --- weekly. And that was quite intense - at least for me. I wont be able to do such a training directly after a "test" race. Because I would push myself to my limits. I for myself would definitely needs some recovery days/weeks (depending on the distance). Where I would only do (very) light or no trainings.

Still recommending the june event or none at all or a private event (if it is possible). In a private event you wont be as fast as in a public event, but it should be a test anyhow?

well all 3 events are public but they are less then an hours drive for me so local ones.

it would be used as a day to do test myself to see how much closer to the desired time i am.

but outside this i will be doing basically 1 day run then 1 day bike 1 day swim x 2 times a week and fitting in my gym workout as well in the weights . so like other the event i know my legs if anything will be warn out so the next day would be swimming as it would be less demanding on the legs.

+this has been my on going debate i have being having with myself and getting everything right places and i'm looking for advice from all different places as this is such a tough one to call.

Although I do love triathlons and have  been doing it for 3 years now I am nowhere near an expert.  To put things in perspective, my last olympic triathlon I finished in 3 hours and 3 minutes which was exactly 60 minutes behind the #1 finisher and I was HAPPY Smiley That time put me in the top 30% of my age category believe it or not.  Both the cycling and running had a lot of vertical so it was fairly brutal, I was very happy to finish the 10k run and feel good at the finish line.

Having exposed my level of in-expertise, I would worry that doing back to back olympic length triathlons two weeks apart is asking for injury - unless you will be treating them as just training exercises and not going all out.

What if you skipped the July 1st triathlon and instead did a half marathon a few weeks later?

you slow old man scooby i was about 7 minutes faster then you Cheesy

the main reason i was thinking of the back to back route was if you want to get better at pull ups you did pull ups if you wanna get better at running you run etc, so that was my logical thinking behind the idea.

as for the half marathon idea i will have to see whats going around locally to me to see if the something mid julyish then!
