Do fingertip pushups have any value? Or are they just from show? I'm asking because I saw this interesting program:

http://ironfingertraining.page.tl/Complete-Finger-Tip-Push_up-Position.htm

Details some progression to get there.

Is there any point?

(I'm asking in sports because it may have some carryover to my Muay Thai.)

WOrks the forearms more than regular pushups and strengthens the tendons and ligaments in the hands, fingers, and wrists.

err no not really... as in they dont work the forearms much more, unless you can't support 60% of your bodyweight over 10 fingers...

And it depends how you do them, if you let the joints hyperextend, by placing the whole of your fingerprints on the floor then you are asking for trouble. They have to be done so the pressure is downwards on the ends of the fingers  i.e. nails downwards, not across.

Strengthening tendons and ligaments is helpful in the sense that it avoids injury, and as wrist injuries are a very common (and easy) injury to attain, it is worth doing so. Also your fingers are only tendons. There are no muscles actually inside them, so by strengthening your fingers you are actually strengthening the tendons that attach to the muscles in the forearm.

I used to do lots of fingertip press ups back in my karate days. Several of my teachers talked of arthritis in later life from heavy hand conditioning.

I would only use techniques like this every day if considering a career in martial arts. Once or twice a week should be fine though.

Fingertip pushups are great for strengthening like little sprite mentioned, but also true that using correct form is crucial. When done right, they dont hurt, pretty good guideline to follow. The tip of the fingers are what is supporting you, with wrist straight. Dont ever let your hands slide down, at that point you a) put finger in their weakest position b)wrist is in its weakest position.

Aswell as its primary benefits, they let you do chest pushups with wrists alligned correctly, like with knuckle pushups.

Finger pushups are not the main culprit in this, alot of martial artists strengthen their hand by the break/heal principle, this has a massive risk of messing you up later on. If done correctly, fingerpushups are not dangerous, as they work with joints that are locked in the strongest position.

Does the strengthening of tendons and ligaments carryover to sport?
They are heavily used in Judo,Akido and probably other sports where grip is important. Strength in the hand comes from forearms muscles yes, but dont forget the tendons and pulley in your hand, they get tougher and more resiliant aswell.

    Thanks guys!

Can anyone post a pic on how to do these correctly? Everything from google is too far, can't see their fingers.  Grin

Fingertip push-ups are imo very important. They strengthen your fingers and therefore strengthen your fist(=your main weapons becomes harder and more devastating) and grabbing a lot. And in reality not all punches are done in fist anyway and with strong fingers you can use some nasty fists. And besides, the guys who can pierce watermelons etc with their fingers only are very impressive and awesome.

There are better and more effective ways of gaining hand strength than fingertip pushups. The main thing they are good for are the tendons, not the muscles of the forearm. Grip training will give you a more solid hand than fingertip pushups. Also some people develop their hands by punching walls or whatever (bruce lee punched into buckets of gravel) which also makes your punch more solid.

Also I prefer crushing peoples hands when they try to do the same to me in handshakes, funny watching a 200lb man be in significant pain just from a handshake (especially as they think they are stronger than me @ 170lbs)

So I assume something like this:

    How to do Fingertip Pushups

    is wrong?

Does anyone have training on how to do the correct ones? It seems either I really can't do them, or my form sucks.
