Hey people,

My sister (im  a dude) is 5'3" and weighs 92 lbs. So she is way underweight. What kind of nutrition and excercise plan do you suggest for her?

                                  thanks in advance

I realized this is in the women section.  Please disregard my advise, unless the ladies agree with it.

If you have concerns regarding your sisters health, talk to your doctor not an online forum. I can't stress this enough.

To perhaps put your mind at rest until then, the first question to ask is how old she is; your sisters BMI is 15.9. In an adult, this would be classed as severly underweight. If she is under the age of 14, then she's probably just at the low end of normal - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_mass_index.

Tell her that she's getting too thin, in this case to the point of anorexia and that she should EAT!

Has she shown other signs of an eating disorder? Such as leaving nearly full plates of food, skipping meals, exercising in secret etc. If she really does have an eating disorder, she needs proper help and suggesting a diet for her is unlikely to work.

Anorexia =/= being underweight, you do not get so underweight that you develop anorexia, this is the second time I've seen someone suggest this on here. It's not a term meaning severely underweight.

Anorexia Nervosa is a very complex psychological disorder that manifests itself in a physical way. It's to do with distorted self image and indeed a distorted way in which someone with anorexia sees the world around them, it can have to do with an underlying form of depression or sadness among many other causes and symptoms and is very difficult to effectively treat. People with Anorexia tend to limit their caloric intake so severely that it leads them to become dangerously underweight and malnourished to the point of sickness and death, this is why Anorexia is associated with very skinny people.

To suggest that any very skinny person has anorexia is a little offensive.

To the Op, has anyone told your sister she is unhealthy and needs to gain weight? some people are just naturally very thin. Has she professed a desire to gain weight?

She has a BMI of 16/17. That's why I assumed she was anorexic.

You can't tell if someone has anorexia by their weight or bmi, it doesn't work like that.

Weight doesn't mean anything, I dislike BMI especially for females, because it does not take into account muscle mass,

A guy at 5'5 and 140lbs can be pretty lean if he is athletic, while a girl is definitely gonna have some extra weight.

I had a friend who is around 5'3 and like mid 90s,  to 100, but she was a C cup, and very lean, but definitely not anorexic, or too skinny looking, unless you prefer fat chicks anyway.

    This.

Just cause someone is skinny doesnt mean they're anorexic, if someone sees themselves as "fat" no matter how damn skinny they get, this is a pretty good indicator.  Has your sister been showing signs of depression, low self esteem, etc?  Does she always say she needs to lose weight or that shes overweight no matter how much people re assure her?  If you answered yes to any one of these, THEN you should be really concerned.  If not, then as was previously said, your sister is just thin.

I agree that assuming every skinny person is anorexic is offensive.  It pissed me straight the fuck off when people all assumed I was anorexic when I cut down to 148 to get a visible 6 pac.

Point is, dont assume, look for the signs, and only be concerned if there really is a need to be.

Not sure you posted that in the right thread? Apart from it not making any sense. Or maybe I'm just dense (rhyme-o-rama!).
