Hello I am writing this for my mom who has been running for most of her life every morning for the past many many years. She is now 50 years old and weighs 124 lbs.  She eats small meals throughout the day, but she gains weight very fast. Recently she got shin splits (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shin_splints)... She now can barely walk and only does ab workouts now, because of it. She is scared of gaining weight and wants to do something while trying to treat herself and make the pain go away. How can she workout so she does not gain weight? She can not run, bike, or swim. What is the best thing for her to do? Again she does not want to just sit down and gain weight, she wants to stay the same or lose weight.

Please help.. + reps to anyone who helps

Thank you in advanced

Tell her to try shadow boxing for 30mins (+/- to her preference).

If you don't know what that is; you just punch (nothing) in the air quickly alternating hands and it really gets your heart rate up! Here's a vid:

Shadow Boxing with Dennythetrainer

Your mom doesn't need to hop around like that, and ignore the fact that its a boxing video, I just wanted to show you what shadow boxing looks like  Tongue

Well eating a little less as she is less active would also help.  Staying active may not be as easy but many feel yoga is great and can be very strenuous..

Just tell her to do yoga and follow good nutrition and count calories.
